Dinner on the Beach

Salute! on the beach has one of the best restaurant settings anywhere. It is located in Key West on Higgs beach, with a small path separating the restaurant from the sand, volleyball net and water. I suppose technically it is on the Atlantic side, but it is at about the Southernmost point in the continental US, . . . → Read More: Dinner on the Beach

Keys Fisheries

There are so many options for a meal along the Overseas Highway. You can go to Leigh Ann’s, where it will take 20 minutes to get a cup of coffee or you can stop at any number of eateries along the way. One of the best, however, is Keys Fisheries.

Located at the end of 35th Street . . . → Read More: Keys Fisheries

Sweet Home Alabama Jack’s

If you take Card Sound Road from Florida City to Key Largo you pass a number of people fishing, a cement company and Alabama Jacks. That’s about it. Alabama Jacks is a bar/restaurant with good food, live music and, I learned, is biker-friendly. It is also essentially a dock overlooking water, where you will occasionally see . . . → Read More: Sweet Home Alabama Jack’s

Better Late than Never

I am usually somewhere at the back of the line when it comes to things like adopting new technology, except for my new cell phone – the HTC Hero – which rocks. I have even personalized it with a picture of Key West Bight as my background. I got on Facebook after everyone else I knew. . . . → Read More: Better Late than Never

‘Tis the Season

The Key West Woman’s Club is a women-only organization that raises money for charitable organizations. Each year the members decorate the building that houses the club, going so far as to decorate teddy bears that are then given to charity. Then they open the house to the public for a holiday season kickoff party.

They have desserts, holiday . . . → Read More: ‘Tis the Season

Garden Variety Jazz

Sunday nights tend to revolve around longing for more weekend, eating large bowls of pasta with family and longing for more weekend (yes, it happens so often that it needed to be listed twice) . Sunday evening at The Gardens Hotel in Key West, however, is a calm, fun, relaxing event – Jazz in the Garden. Each . . . → Read More: Garden Variety Jazz

The Grinch Who Stole My Parade

Key west is great. People there will throw a parade for just about anything. From Fantasy Fest nuttiness to the holiday season they have it covered. This year was the first time we have seen the Christmas parade. It was filled with abut 60 floats (one of which was the Miata clubs mini-parade of 20 or . . . → Read More: The Grinch Who Stole My Parade

Ice Cream, You Scream

For a while now I have been complaining, rather loudly, to all around me, about the lack of really good ice cream in Key West. Sure there is Haagen Dazs, which is OK, but boooooooooooring. There is Flamingo Crossing, on Duval and Virginia streets, which has serviceable ice cream in gigantic portions. They make their own, . . . → Read More: Ice Cream, You Scream

Ain’t Life Grand

One day I will make it to the Grand Cafe on Duval for dinner. In the meantime, I have been there for lunch a couple of times and it is quite pleasant, if unremarkable. The food is good, the service is good, the menu is a tad on the boring side, in my not-so-humble opinion.

Although it . . . → Read More: Ain’t Life Grand

Cafe Solé

It was a chilly Saturday evening that we decided to dine at Cafe Solé, located at 1029 Southard Street in Key West. Fortunately they are well prepared with heaters, so it was quite comfortable in the garden. You realize, though, that “chilly” to this native Floridian means anywhere from 68 – 72 degrees.

The food: Portabella . . . → Read More: Cafe Solé
