Personal Choice

If you’ve been following along, you know I am a wine geek. I also love to travel and eat. When I travel, I generally stay at small, independently run inns. When dining, I avoid chain restaurants like the plague, with limited, lunch-time-desperation exceptions. Wine is no different. I seek out small producers, and winemakers with interesting . . . → Read More: Personal Choice

Lighten Up

Life is simply too short to not enjoy yourself. Certain things we do because we must: grocery shopping,  laundry, work. Other things we do for fun: bowling, sporting events and concerts. Last weekend was the opening show for Jimmy Buffett’s Under the Big Top Tour, and it was great fun.

The Martha Stewart of Tailgating

Rewind 365 days. Florida Keys Guy and I, along with another couple drove up to Tampa to see Jimmy Buffet in concert. Acting responsibly, we stayed at a hotel with a shuttle service to the concert. Enter 1.75L of Patron Silver tequila.

We arrived at the amphitheater parking lot with no car, but oodles of food and . . . → Read More: The Martha Stewart of Tailgating

Gluttony

What started as two friends coming to visit turned into a full-on wine weekend. I had planned on having 2 people stay with us, and then 6-8 others in a hotel for our wine dinner Saturday. As it turned out, we did two dinners at exceptional restaurants with great wines and even better company.

Friday night, . . . → Read More: Gluttony

Deli-cious

Key West has just about every type of food you could want, except Indian. Although I would love for someone to open an Indian restaurant, I’m not quite sure how grouper vindaloo would go over here. But, I digress.

This weekend, I went to Goldman’s Deli in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center. They have a good . . . → Read More: Deli-cious

Whale of a Good Time

Wahoo’s at the Whale Harbor in Islamorada was the lunch spot yesterday. After picking friends up at the Fort Lauderdale airport, we headed south for the beautiful drive to Key West. Mrs Mac’s was a little early in the drive and Keys Fisheries a little too late, as we were hungry, so we went to the . . . → Read More: Whale of a Good Time

Independence

Key West is a funny place. If you’ve been here once you know that. We have an extremely liberal population, a huge gay population and a “come as you are” attitude. Then there is “Sign Guy” who holds up a sign with his opinion about what his god thinks of the gay community.  He gets in . . . → Read More: Independence

La Trattoria

The food is much better than it looks in these less than stellar cell phone photos. La Trattoria, at 524 Duval, is a delightful oasis in the middle of the action.

However, in my opinion, they have committed a truly heinous sin: no vintages on the wine list. When you sell $20-40 bottles of crap, nobody expects . . . → Read More: La Trattoria

Barracuda

Driving by the Barracuda Grill, it looks like every other restaurant in the Florida Keys: low key and fairly nondescript. Inside is a whole different ball game. It is charming, adorable and, as an added bonus, has great food.

At first glance, the menu pricing seems a bit odd. Entrees are between $16 for fried shrimp to . . . → Read More: Barracuda

Why travel?

My last post – with the woman wondering whether Key West was worth her time – got me thinking. Why do people travel? Is it the museums? The food? Trying to navigate a foreign subway station in a language you don’t understand? Asking for directions from an old lady on crutches who happens to be surrounded . . . → Read More: Why travel?
