I had never been to Bagatelle restaurant in all of the time I have spent in Key West. As I recently got the Restaurant Card, with a two-for-one entree I decided to give it a shot. Overall, there were many positives and a few negatives to the dining experience. Continue reading Restaurant Review: Bagatelle – The Food and The People Watching

Since the season premier of Top Chef: DC, I have been underwhelmed by both the talent and the contestants. They are an unlikable bunch, save for one or two. I have been rooting for Andrea to go home since she showed up on my TV screen a few weeks ago. Why? Good question… Continue reading Cheftestant Andrea Curto-Randazzo Ruined My Birthday

The Key West Woman’s Club raises money for all sorts of charities. One of the ways they raise money is by selling the Talk of the Town Restaurant Card. This card costs $95 each, with proceeds going to local charities.
The card entitles you to two for one entrees at twenty different restaurants. It is valid until June 30, 2011, so there is plenty of time to get to all of them. Some of the restaurants on this year’s card include Thai Life, Blackfin Bistro, Hogfish Bar and Grill, Bagatelle (review coming on Thursday, stay tuned), Camille‘s (dinner only – you won’t find me there) and many others. If you have been reading for a while, you know that one of my absolute favorite restaurants, if not THE favorite, is Azur. Why? The food is great, the service is warm and friendly and the atmosphere is inviting. Everyone we have taken there has loved it. (That is quite a few people considering that we had company for about 95% of the weekends through May).
Michael and Drew, the owners, do a great job with everything, especially the gnocchi. You can get it four different ways in either a half or full portion. Continue reading A Great Bargain: Why I Love the Summer

The birthday party at a roller rink: Disco ball, skates with orange rubber stoppers, carpeted walls, freshly made donuts and fried Milky Way bars on a stick. It conjures an image of a pre-teen party. This was, in fact, the party that my friend Cori had when she was 10, perhaps minus the fried candy bars – I don’t think that trend started until a bit later.
This was also the surprise party made for her 40th birthday. Continue reading Time Warp: Roller Rink Birthday Party

The People’s Theater of Key West is a local community theater group, which includes The Improvables, an improv group. They have performed the last two weekends at The Bottlecap and will be appearing once again this weekend.
For the show, the group is divided into two teams with a referee awarding points and trying, sometimes in vain, to keep the actors in line. Continue reading Need a Laugh?

The overseas highway, the stretch of US1 from Key Largo to Key West is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country. Most of the 106 miles is one lane in each direction. Views of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean stretch as far as the eye can see. The Seven Mile Bridge is a wonder of engineering.
Because the stretch of road is so long and narrow, there are a few things that you can do to make the drive more enjoyable for everyone. Continue reading Love the Florida Keys? 7 Rules for Driving the Overseas Highway

I had not been to Seven Fish in at least five years. Why? It’s not the food, which is always excellent. It was this: while the food and service were good, I always felt rushed.
Recently, we were at the Flaming Buoy Filet Co and were talking with one of the owners, Fred, who also happens to . . . → Read More: Restaurant Review: Seven Fish

The motto of Key West is “One Human Family” which generally means that people should be nice to each other. More often than not, they are (unlike the rest of South Florida). Aside from generally being nice, Key Westers tend to not take things too seriously. Consider these signs seen recently on a local business:
