Dog Wrangler

Getting other dogs home is exhausting. I need a nap!

While waiting to close on the purchase of our new house, after having moved thirteen years worth of stuff out of the old house, we are staying with my parents for a few weeks. What that means is (a) we eat really, really well at all times (miso sea bass, anyone?), (b) I am always freezing in the house of 72 degree air conditioning (I know my northern friends don’t feel sorry for me) and, (c) there is a whole new world of places to walk Babka.

I typically do not take my phone with me on the dog walks, as I enjoy the hour of being unplugged every day, so unfortunately I don’t have photos of the antics of the last couple of days. As we were walking on Monday, I saw a little white Maltese running down the street. He had no collar or tags and had no interest in coming over to meet Babka. Instead he ran away, then looked curiously back at us several times.  I asked one woman outside if it was her dog. No luck. Then another neighbor came out to get her mail and told me where the dog lived. (She also told me that he and his sister get out all the time. Lovely.) So, we manage to get the little guy to his doorstep. The owner did not seem particularly relieved, and yet, if it were me, I would be thrilled the little pooch didn’t get run over by a car. At least he ended up safely at home.

Then yesterday, as we were walking down another block, a little fluffy, adorable dog comes running out of the wide-open front door of his house, eager to meet Babka. The two played for a few minutes, but when it was time for us to continue walking, he started following us down the street. At least I knew where this one lived. His owner was relieved to see that he was fine, although kind of horrified that he got out.

It leaves me wondering what kind of other doggie adventures we will have while we are here. Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be more, and I will share. Stay tuned… the Key West Food and Wine Festival is this weekend. Recaps starting on Friday.
