Happy Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a time to reflect, to gather with family and to eat. Some people watch football, too, but I will pass on that particular tradition. Tomorrow evening will bring twenty people to my house for an assortment of good eats. The menu includes:

To start we will have potato knishes, pigs (really kosher hot dogs) . . . → Read More: Happy Thanksgiving

Q.P.R.

It’s a great QPR” is often a term bandied about by wine geeks in search of something to have with a mid-week pizza. But I think it applies to just about everything in life. QPR stands for quality price ratio. So, let’s say you drink a crappy bottle of wine, but it only cost $10. Nope. Not a good QPR, because the Q (quality) part is missing from the equation. A $50 bottle of wine, however, might be a great QPR because the quality is great. Bonus points if it has increased in value since your purchase.

Even though I buy lottery tickets (because I am convinced that I will win), I really despise wasting money, so I am always looking for the good QPR. Continue reading Q.P.R.

Blowout Birthday Bash

The start of a really good night.

This weekend we were invited to our friend’s house for his birthday. As he is a wine geek, too, there were bound to be some good selections. Of course we RSVP’d that we would be coming, and as they live an hour away, we would also be staying over. (I know these people and the wine focus of the meal, there was no chance we would be driving home. Oh, and can we also bring Babka?) We arrived for one meal and one quick sleep with gifts, clothes to change into, a dog bed and, of course, the dog. Continue reading Blowout Birthday Bash

Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

Zonta 5K, where I was very, very slow

This weekend was the 20th annual Meeting of the Minds (MOTM), the annual Parrothead gathering in Key West. No, I did not attend. However, every year there is a rumor that Jimmy Buffett will be playing a show sometime during the weekend. Every. Single. Year. It hasn’t been true in quite a while. Until last Friday. Of course, these things are generally kept under wraps until the last minute, so where was I for the 4:00 Friday show on Duval street? In my car. Listening to JD Spradlin yap about it on Radio Margaritaville. Continue reading Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

Eating New York

I have been in New York City for two days and already have had many great meals. We arrived Saturday morning before the snow (yes, it is still October) and that evening met our friends at Ethos, a Greek restaurant on 51st Street and 1st Avenue. I am pretty sure that due to the horrible weather, we could have scored a table at our first choice of restaurants, but this was the reservation that was made and we were sticking to it. I Heart New York

Looking south from Top of the Rock, New York City

I lived in New York City for six years after college (a while ago) and loved every minute of it. Well, most minutes of it. The part where I was run over by a taxi on my way to work? Not so much. The constant things to do and places to go? Absolutely. Continue reading I Heart New York

Things My Dog Says

Babka "guarding" the window

As a new dog owner, I know that one of the things the “experts” warn against is humanizing your dog. I get it. Babka’s a dog. She barks, plays, “kills” a toy squirrel every chance she gets and loves treats. She also talks to me. Here are some of the highlights of the last three weeks: Continue reading Things My Dog Says

Fantasy Fest: Event Picks

KEY WEST, FL - OCTOBER 30: In this handout pho...

Fantasy Fest always brings a bunch of fun events to choose from. Generally, my favorite is the Masquerade March, a parade on Friday night where locals and visitors alike dress up, drink heavily and frolic in the streets, stopping for drinks along the way. In 2009, my shoe broke on the way to parade forcing me to stop at the dollar store and buy size 11 pool shoes (I wear a 7 1/2). Last year, my wig had been put on badly (by me – I need some drag queen lessons, stat) and I had a perfect stranger fix it, after I stopped at her house to use the bathroom. But, there are many good events over the course of the week. Continue reading Fantasy Fest: Event Picks

Let the Fun Begin

Oooh, scary!

Originally created as a way to stimulate the local economy during the off-season, Fantasy Fest has become world famous for the parties, fun and yes, body painting. (See this post for Florida Keys Girl’s Rules to Remember During Fantasy Fest).

Today is the kickoff for the week-long fun fest. For months, people have been campaigning for the titles of King and Queen (and this year: King-ette) of Fantasy Fest. The road to royalty involves fundraising by any means possible: bingo, chicken drops, raffles and more. Continue reading Let the Fun Begin
