Since we were going to Chicago for the Cellar Diminishment Party anyway, naturally I had a list of potential restaurant choices for the following night. We would only be in Chicago for two nights, so that left us with two lunches and one dinner, plus the party. We landed in Chicago, hopped on the Orange Line L train towards downtown and immediately got a call from a friend. “Are you coming to the hotel before you go for pizza?” Indeed, we were. I’m always a little leery of “vegetarian” places. I’ve been to several in other places where either they try too hard to be a “real” restaurant or they are just mediocre places to get tofu. Fortunately, The Cafe is neither. The Cafe offers mostly vegetarian fare, which basically means no land animals. They do, however, offer fresh fish. Continue reading The Cafe, Key West

That is a lot of stemware.
Friends of ours who live in Coral Gables are always trying to get us to go to their neighborhood for dinner. Usually, I weasel out of it and make them come someplace near us. But, last week after tennis (for FKGuy) and relaxing in The Biltmore pool (for me), we all had dinner at Palme d’Or, the signature restaurant at The Biltmore hotel. The incredibly yummy tuna melt
Captain’s Tavern is older than I am. It was founded in 1971 and I’m pretty sure the decor has not been updated since then. Inside it is dark and dreary, although service tends to be friendly. Fortunately, the carpet is not the star of the show here, the fish is. The menu is huge and when specials are taken into account, it is quite a feat to just get through the selections and make a decision. Continue reading Captain’s Tavern, Miami

 Nikki and the Strawberry Mojito
I dread having to go the Village at Gulfstream. It is a monstrosity of casino, restaurants, shops and parking that is nearly impossible to navigate. On the other hand, if you are anywhere close to Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale or Aventura, it makes for a handy place to meet people. It was in this convenient-yet-uninspiring mode that I met a friend for dinner there last week. We chose Cantina Laredo, largely because (a) I had never been there and (b) even bad Mexican food can be helped along by a margarita. I was pleasantly surprised. Now THAT is a good birthday celebration!
I love celebrating my birthday. Maybe it is because I was born on Christmas Eve, so people tend to forget about it (seriously, how can you forget someone’s birthday on Christmas Eve? I remember birthdays of people I only marginally know if it is on a big holiday.) Maybe it is because I am an only child and crave attention. Maybe I just like the candles and the guilt-free dessert. ..I’m pretty sure that is it. Continue reading The Candle-less Birthday

 Peach palm fritters... yum!
We decided to give Fin another try over the weekend as (a) it was my mother’s birthday and nothing says birthday better than fancy food and (b) most recently the owners have told me that the portions have been increased and we should really try it again. So we did, and once again I have a somewhat mixed review. First the good: Continue reading Fin, Key West: Take Two

 Jefe's Fish Tacos
They’re trendy, they’re cheap and there is something for (almost) everyone. What am I talking about? Food trucks. There is something really appealing about eating food out of a truck while standing at a little table with strangers. I went to the Hard Rock Casino last night with some friends for the Miami Food Truck Rally. Once passed the headache-inducing parking structure and nausea-inducing, smoke-filled casino, we made it out to the parking lot where twenty food trucks, and infinite fried food possibilities await. This all comes on the heels of my meeting with a nutritionist (more on that at a later date). Now, onto the food. Continue reading Miami Food Trucks

After almost two years of writing this blog I have reviewed 57 restaurants in the Florida Keys, 44 of which are (or, in some cases, were) in Key West. During this time, I have revisited many of the places already reviewed. In most instances, the food and service have been consistent each time. In other cases, not so much. In a couple of rare cases, my opinion has completely changed. So, first the good news. Continue reading Restaurant Recap

Over the weekend we ate spectacularly well while celebrating our friend’s big five-oh. After an awesome dinner at The Flaming Buoy and killer hogfish sandwiches at Hogfish Bar and Grill, we ended up at Blue Heaven for dinner the next night. I hadn’t been there for dinner in years, and now I know why. As it had been a while, I called to find out the corkage policy and was told “we normally charge $15 per bottle.” (You see where this is going, don’t you?) Continue reading Blue Heaven, Key West
