Pilot House, Key Largo

Worth the effort to find.

So there I was, driving northbound along the Overseas Highway when we decided to stop for lunch. Having done some research (OK, I Googled “Dog friendly restaurants in Key Largo” while my mom was driving) we settled on lunch at Snappers. Turns out, they only allow dogs in one small area of the outside, and only after 4 PM. That hardly seems dog friendly to me. After being rejected by Snappers, we headed to the Pilot House. This time I called ahead and made sure it is Babka-friendly. Indeed, it is. Continue reading Pilot House, Key Largo

Eating New York

I have been in New York City for two days and already have had many great meals. We arrived Saturday morning before the snow (yes, it is still October) and that evening met our friends at Ethos, a Greek restaurant on 51st Street and 1st Avenue. I am pretty sure that due to the horrible weather, we could have scored a table at our first choice of restaurants, but this was the reservation that was made and we were sticking to it. A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

Me - with the cruiser bike - not looking at all like a Serious Biker.

I normally ride around Key West on my very inexpensive cruiser bike, which is a little too small for me, has coaster brakes and no gears. It is my kind of bike. I lock it all the time, as it could be gone in a minute otherwise. Naturally I was excited to learn that The Innsbruck had bikes we could borrow during our stay, free of charge. Bonus: they are cruisers. Yes, they had hand brakes and a few speeds, but nonetheless I would be on (somewhat) familiar ground.  Continue reading A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

Frasca, Boulder, Colorado

As we were planning our trip, my friend asked us what we would like to do while visiting them. Dining at Frasca was top of my list. “That is the best restaurant in Boulder,” she says to me. Yes, that is precisely why I want to go. She could not get a reservation online so I called about a month ahead of time and secured our table. Continue reading Frasca, Boulder, Colorado

Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

I interrupt my vacation recap of eating, drinking, hiking and biking for a little public service announcement. September is the month restaurants dread most, as there are few tourists and the island is generally quiet. So this is the time of year when many restaurants close for vacation. Before you plan your next meal, take stock of who is closed. Here are some of the restaurants you won’t get to enjoy for a few more weeks. Continue reading Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

Brexi Brasserie, Aspen, Colorado

As I was planning the Colorado portion of our trip, I made dinner reservations for three nights. In choosing the restaurants, I chose Brexi largely because we were going to be there on Wednesday, which was our anniversary, and their plat du jour on Wednesdays is sole meuniere. We could not go wrong. Continue reading Brexi Brasserie, Aspen, Colorado

Eating Chicago, Part II

The post-party breakfast.

You didn’t think the Chicago restaurant reviews would stop at one, did you? I had to eat the next day, too. We met friends that live in Chicago for a very early post-party brunch at Meli Cafe. I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the menu. Crepes? Sure. Pancakes? Of course. Homemade empanadas? Yes. Juice bar the size of a small country? That, too. How we ever managed to make a choice on breakfast is a mystery to me. Continue reading Eating Chicago, Part II

Eating Chicago

Since we were going to Chicago for the Cellar Diminishment Party anyway, naturally I had a list of potential restaurant choices for the following night. We would only be in Chicago for two nights, so that left us with two lunches and one dinner, plus the party. We landed in Chicago, hopped on the Orange Line L train towards downtown and immediately got a call from a friend. “Are you coming to the hotel before you go for pizza?” Indeed, we were. The Cafe, Key West

I’m always a little leery of “vegetarian” places. I’ve been to several in other places where either they try too hard to be a “real” restaurant or they are just mediocre places to get tofu. Fortunately, The Cafe is neither. The Cafe offers mostly vegetarian fare, which basically means no land animals. They do, however, offer fresh fish. Continue reading The Cafe, Key West

Palme d’Or at The Biltmore Hotel, Miami

That is a lot of stemware.

Friends of ours who live in Coral Gables are always trying to get us to go to their neighborhood for dinner. Usually, I weasel out of it and make them come someplace near us. But, last week after tennis (for FKGuy) and relaxing in The Biltmore pool (for me), we all had dinner at Palme d’Or, the signature restaurant at The Biltmore hotel.
