An Appetite For Murder, by Lucy Burdette

I will admit, when Lucy Burdette’s book showed up at my door, I was a little surprised. I don’t usually do book reviews, but I do read. Sometimes grudgingly. I read books for my book club once a month, but it has been a while since I enjoyed one of those, and frankly, I have read some truly awful book club books. So, I was delighted to have a novel in hand – paperback, no less – to read while lounging on the deck. Continue reading An Appetite For Murder, by Lucy Burdette

Eating Key West

Normally, I review one restaurant or meal at a time. This past weekend, however, deserves a recap of its own. Since my cousin was coming to town and we have many of the same interests, mainly revolving around eating, drinking and a love-hate relationship with running, I planned the eating and drinking (and a little running) tour of Key West. Continue reading Eating Key West

Eating (and Bowling) New York

It is a rare occurrence that I find myself in New York City with no plans. Normally I am scheduled all day and night, looking to squeeze in additions (Grom, anyone? How about a jaunt to H&M? I missed out on both this trip). But earlier this week, I was in just that situation, until my cousin’s bowling league game got pushed back a few hours. She immediately texted me: What are you doing for dinner? My response: Meeting you? We met at Txikito, a Basque restaurant on ninth avenue. Continue reading Eating (and Bowling) New York

Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

I interrupt my vacation recap of eating, drinking, hiking and biking for a little public service announcement. September is the month restaurants dread most, as there are few tourists and the island is generally quiet. So this is the time of year when many restaurants close for vacation. Before you plan your next meal, take stock of who is closed. Here are some of the restaurants you won’t get to enjoy for a few more weeks. Continue reading Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

My sister-in-law is coming to visit this weekend and it will be her first trip to Key West. Naturally, I’ve been trying to plan some fun activities for the weekend. She is coming with my mother-in-law, who has been here before, so I am coming up with things we can do that both will enjoy. Continue reading The First Time

The Candle-less Birthday

Happy Birthday

Now THAT is a good birthday celebration!

I love celebrating my birthday. Maybe it is because I was born on Christmas Eve, so people tend to forget about it (seriously, how can you forget someone’s birthday on Christmas Eve? I remember birthdays of people I only marginally know if it is on a big holiday.) Maybe it is because I am an only child and crave attention. Maybe I just like the candles and the guilt-free dessert. ..I’m pretty sure that is it. Continue reading The Candle-less Birthday

Fin, Key West: Take Two

Peach palm fritters... yum!

We decided to give Fin another try over the weekend as (a) it was my mother’s birthday and nothing says birthday better than fancy food and (b) most recently the owners have told me that the portions have been increased and we should really try it again. So we did, and once again I have a somewhat mixed review. First the good: Continue reading Fin, Key West: Take Two

Restaurant Recap

End of US highway 1 in Key West, Florida

After almost two years of writing this blog I have reviewed 57 restaurants in the Florida Keys, 44 of which are (or, in some cases, were) in Key West. During this time, I have revisited many of the places already reviewed. In most instances, the food and service have been consistent each time. In other cases, not so much. In a couple of rare cases, my opinion has completely changed. So, first the good news. Continue reading Restaurant Recap

Using a Public Restroom: Please Lock the Door

Toilet paper

One of my very first blog posts, on October 26, 2009 was about not locking the door in a public restroom. I had the misfortune of walking into a gas station restroom to a woman in a lace thong with her jeans around her ankles. It was not a pretty picture, I assure you. Well, it seems that the peeing public still has not figured out the concept of a door lock. When you use a bathroom in a public place, you should always observe a few simple rules of etiquette: Continue reading Using a Public Restroom: Please Lock the Door

196 Miles

This looks nothing like me running.

196 miles is roughly the distance between my home in Hollywood, FL and my home in Key West. It is the distance between Baltimore, MD and New York City. 196 miles is over 1 million feet. A million. It is also the distance that I have run thus far in my half-marathon training. After nearly forty three hours of running, it is somewhat surprising that I am still standing. Continue reading 196 Miles
