Pepe’s is the oldest restaurant in Key West, and from the outside, it looks like it. Opened in 1909, Pepe’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the year. Seven days a week, 365 days a year. That is a lot of eggs, Bloody Mary’s and fish sandwiches. The inside is definitely old school, but as Babka was joining us for lunch, we sat outside in the lovely garden. We arrived to a relatively short (for a Sunday) twenty minute wait, giving me plenty of time to eavesdrop on the already drunk people ambling up to the bar. Continue reading Pepe’s, Key West

Normally, I review one restaurant or meal at a time. This past weekend, however, deserves a recap of its own. Since my cousin was coming to town and we have many of the same interests, mainly revolving around eating, drinking and a love-hate relationship with running, I planned the eating and drinking (and a little running) tour of Key West. Continue reading Eating Key West

My friends have raved about the Sunday brunch at Martin’s for quite a while, so this weekend we decided to give it a try. We arrived around noon and were seated in the back patio. There are a few seating choices: indoors in the dining room, out front watching the passers-by on Duval Street, the back patio and the center, lounge-y part complete with low tables and chairs. I liked our choice. Continue reading Martin’s, Key West

Zonta 5K, where I was very, very slow
This weekend was the 20th annual Meeting of the Minds (MOTM), the annual Parrothead gathering in Key West. No, I did not attend. However, every year there is a rumor that Jimmy Buffett will be playing a show sometime during the weekend. Every. Single. Year. It hasn’t been true in quite a while. Until last Friday. Of course, these things are generally kept under wraps until the last minute, so where was I for the 4:00 Friday show on Duval street? In my car. Listening to JD Spradlin yap about it on Radio Margaritaville. Continue reading Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

I interrupt my vacation recap of eating, drinking, hiking and biking for a little public service announcement. September is the month restaurants dread most, as there are few tourists and the island is generally quiet. So this is the time of year when many restaurants close for vacation. Before you plan your next meal, take stock of who is closed. Here are some of the restaurants you won’t get to enjoy for a few more weeks. Continue reading Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

After almost two years of writing this blog I have reviewed 57 restaurants in the Florida Keys, 44 of which are (or, in some cases, were) in Key West. During this time, I have revisited many of the places already reviewed. In most instances, the food and service have been consistent each time. In other cases, not so much. In a couple of rare cases, my opinion has completely changed. So, first the good news. Continue reading Restaurant Recap

I have indulged in to-go goodies from Croissants De France in the past – a to die for Nutella beignet or a good cappuccino – but have never eaten there until last week. Although it was very hot outside, the garden was shaded, fanned and comfortable. The menu is filled with egg dishes, sandwiches, galettes and crepes. The Duval Street location makes it popular with tourists as well as locals. Continue reading Croissants De France, Key West

I hesitate to call this a restaurant review because I am not sure if we can classify Sandy’s that way. Yes, they serve food, and they even cook it to order. But the only seating (at what I affectionately refer to as the “chef’s table”) is a few stools by the window overlooking the grill. Plus, it is inside a laundromat. That being said, they make a delicious egg sandwich. Continue reading Sandy’s Cafe, Key West

Located across the street from the Hemingway House, where there are actual six-toed cats, is Six Toed Cat, the restaurant. I went there for lunch on a recent Saturday afternoon. The interior is a little sparse, but the tables are shaped like paws – with six toes, naturally. Otherwise there is not much to look at. I would have sat on the lovely deck overlooking Whitehead Street had every other patron not had that same idea. So we sat inside, in air conditioned comfort. One of my very first blog posts, on October 26, 2009 was about not locking the door in a public restroom. I had the misfortune of walking into a gas station restroom to a woman in a lace thong with her jeans around her ankles. It was not a pretty picture, I assure you. Well, it seems that the peeing public still has not figured out the concept of a door lock. When you use a bathroom in a public place, you should always observe a few simple rules of etiquette: Continue reading Using a Public Restroom: Please Lock the Door
