Happy Thanksgiving

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a time to reflect, to gather with family and to eat. Some people watch football, too, but I will pass on that particular tradition. Tomorrow evening will bring twenty people to my house for an assortment of good eats. The menu includes:

To start we will have potato knishes, pigs (really kosher hot dogs) . . . → Read More: Happy Thanksgiving

Things My Dog Says

Babka "guarding" the window

As a new dog owner, I know that one of the things the “experts” warn against is humanizing your dog. I get it. Babka’s a dog. She barks, plays, “kills” a toy squirrel every chance she gets and loves treats. She also talks to me. Here are some of the highlights of the last three weeks: Continue reading Things My Dog Says

Oh, The Places We Go

Babka loves riding in the car!

Babka, the somewhat anxious, hates-to-be-left-alone, but amazingly sweet and super cute terrier has now been with us for a little over two weeks. After I got over my initial reaction of wanting to shoot myself (“What did I do? This is what I have to look forward to for the next 15 years? How will I survive?“) I have embraced the dog-owning life. Continue reading Oh, The Places We Go

What’s in a Name?

A sweet dog needs a sweet name.

A person’s name is something they generally live with forever. Your parents may not have been so creative and simply perused the list of most popular names and picked one. They may have given you a creative spelling, causing people to misspell your name throughout your life. You may have gotten married and in a moment of undecidedness, simply added your husband’s name onto the end of yours and used both. OK, maybe I’m the only one that has done that. Nonetheless, these decisions are usually permanent. Continue reading What’s in a Name?

On The Road with Florida Keys Girl is a new video series showcasing various people and places. Today’s feature is Aspen, Colorado. The Innsbruck in Aspen is a beautiful property. A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

Me - with the cruiser bike - not looking at all like a Serious Biker.

I normally ride around Key West on my very inexpensive cruiser bike, which is a little too small for me, has coaster brakes and no gears. It is my kind of bike. I lock it all the time, as it could be gone in a minute otherwise. Naturally I was excited to learn that The Innsbruck had bikes we could borrow during our stay, free of charge. Bonus: they are cruisers. Yes, they had hand brakes and a few speeds, but nonetheless I would be on (somewhat) familiar ground.  Continue reading A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

The Cellar Diminishment Party

A small sampling of the wines

Every other year, a very generous couple hosts a blowout shindig at their house in suburban Chicago, called the Cellar Diminishment Party. They buy too much wine and need a little help in the consumption department. We are more than happy to oblige. I have been to the last three of these fun-fests. People come from all over the place for this party. The hosts whip out 150 bottles of wine and strategically place them around the house (Europe is in the basement, Pinot Noir on the piano…) along with water stations and dump buckets. Continue reading The Cellar Diminishment Party

1997

On this day in 1997 (well, it was a Sunday, actually), FKGuy and I were married. It was a lovely, sunny South Florida day. Wait, scratch that. It was summer in South Florida and therefore rained. A lot. But the wedding was entirely indoors (it was August in Florida, I’m not a total fool) and it was a lot of fun. The band was great, the food was yummy, the wine sucked (it was a Kosher affair – what can you do?) and everyone had a good time. It doesn’t really seem like it was fourteen years ago.

On August 31, 1997 Princess Diana died. Continue reading 1997

New Cell Phone, Always a Drama (Thanks, Sprint)

This has been a week of inefficiencies. It is annoying, but it happens. I desperately needed a new cell phone so when Sprint came out with the Motorola Photon 4G, I jumped on it. It has all features a person could want, plus it is cool. I won’t get into the fact that Sprint now charges a $10 “premium data add-on” or, what I refer to as the “cool phone surcharge”. Some new phrasing would at least make my bill a little more entertaining. So, I get the phone, after a lot of calls, I activate the phone and that is where the trouble starts. Continue reading New Cell Phone, Always a Drama (Thanks, Sprint)

Hair Gel Conspiracy

Who would think that something as inconsequential as hair gel would be a problem? Well, apparently it is. I use one of the most popular brands of hair care products on the market, Garnier Fructis. Why? They are really quite good. Plus, they are inexpensive. Win – win. Unless, of course, you have to travel. Continue reading Hair Gel Conspiracy
