In 1999, surrounded by Y2Crazies, I decided that I would not go out on New Years Eve. It was a good choice, and I have not gone out on New Years Eve since. Instead, I invite friends over for dinner. Those dinners have evolved over the years and this one was one of the nuttiest ever. Eight courses (plus appetizers), 12 bottles of wine, a few beers and a silver cake.

If I commit to something, I typically do it. Whatever it is, no matter how annoying or how much I regret saying “Yep, sure, I can do that.” Somehow, it always happens. Last year when I committed to running a half marathon with Team in Training, I trained so that I would be prepared. I ran three days a week, distance dictated by my training calendar, for over three months. I did not miss one single training. Why? Because I knew I had to put in the time in order to finish the race and be able to walk when I was done.

 Smokin' margaritas
I had been meaning to check out the Smokin‘ Tuna since they opened a couple of months ago, but just did not have the opportunity. Then, last weekend, after I had registered for the Hog‘s Breath 5K, as we were making our way up Duval, we saw a guy outside advertising the Smokin’ Tuna. Normally, I would have ignored him and kept walking, but he said the magic words… “You can bring your dog.” Babka loved the idea. Continue reading Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, Key West

Normally, I review one restaurant or meal at a time. This past weekend, however, deserves a recap of its own. Since my cousin was coming to town and we have many of the same interests, mainly revolving around eating, drinking and a love-hate relationship with running, I planned the eating and drinking (and a little running) tour of Key West. Babka at the Hog's Breath with Alison.
For the past eighteen years the Hog’s Breath has put on the Hog Trot, a Thanksgiving weekend 5K race. This was only my second one. I signed up late, was congested and had both wine and margaritas the night before. There was no way it was going to go well for me. Continue reading Hog’s Breath Hog Trot 5K

As promised, here is a recap of the great meal we had last night. The food was delicious, the company superb and the best part? Not tons of leftovers.

After.
Guacamole… not so traditional, but delicious. And with multi-color chips. Racial harmony in the chip basket. . . . → Read More: Thanksgiving: The Photos

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, a time to reflect, to gather with family and to eat. Some people watch football, too, but I will pass on that particular tradition. Tomorrow evening will bring twenty people to my house for an assortment of good eats. The menu includes:
To start we will have potato knishes, pigs (really kosher hot dogs) . . . → Read More: Happy Thanksgiving

 Babka "guarding" the window
As a new dog owner, I know that one of the things the “experts” warn against is humanizing your dog. I get it. Babka’s a dog. She barks, plays, “kills” a toy squirrel every chance she gets and loves treats. She also talks to me. Here are some of the highlights of the last three weeks: Continue reading Things My Dog Says

Babka loves riding in the car!
Babka, the somewhat anxious, hates-to-be-left-alone, but amazingly sweet and super cute terrier has now been with us for a little over two weeks. After I got over my initial reaction of wanting to shoot myself (“What did I do? This is what I have to look forward to for the next 15 years? How will I survive?“) I have embraced the dog-owning life. Continue reading Oh, The Places We Go

A sweet dog needs a sweet name.
A person’s name is something they generally live with forever. Your parents may not have been so creative and simply perused the list of most popular names and picked one. They may have given you a creative spelling, causing people to misspell your name throughout your life. You may have gotten married and in a moment of undecidedness, simply added your husband’s name onto the end of yours and used both. OK, maybe I’m the only one that has done that. Nonetheless, these decisions are usually permanent. Continue reading What’s in a Name?
