Unplanned

As I was making the Mainland-to-Monroe drive on Friday, I was reveling in the lack of plans I had for the weekend. I had just finished telling FKGuy about how I was looking forward to free museum weekend and some quality time in the pool with a cool beverage in hand. That was it. No other plans. Danger Charters: A Great Sunset Sail

When people plan their vacations in Key West, it often involves a sunset cruise. After all, it is the postcard image of Key West, right? A beautiful sunset with a sailboat in the picture. So, last weekend, with guests in town, we took them on a sunset cruise. We chose Danger Charters Wind and Wine sail. Continue reading Danger Charters: A Great Sunset Sail

An Amazing Save

Kitten in the road looked a lot like this guy... only didn't give me enough time to get out my camera.

I seem to have a few of these feel good stories lately, and I love it. We left plenty of time for doing the Key West to Fort Lauderdale airport run with no scrambling necessary. The drive from Key West to the mainland was all going as expected: easy drive through the Keys, stop for coffee at Midway Cafe, more easy driving in the Keys and then rush hour traffic once we hit Kendall. Chevy Volt: Plug It In

The fine folks at Chevy brought over a new Volt last week for me to test drive. Admittedly, I was curious about how it would perform. The Volt is an electric/gas hybrid that runs primarily on a battery charge until that runs out, then it switches over to gas, and the transition is seamless.

I was really excited to try it out. Clearly, I am not the only curious one. As I was leaving Panera Bread, a guy came running out after me asking about the car, as he is thinking of buying one. He asked if it was a comfortable car. “See for yourself. Have a seat,” I invited. “Oh no, I can’t sit in your car,” he says. I let him know that it is, in fact, Chevy’s car, and he jumped right in to see how it felt. Continue reading Chevy Volt: Plug It In

The Kindness of Strangers

When I was little my mother always told me not to talk to strangers. She was – at least some of the time – wrong.

FKGuy and I are nicely settling in to our new house but have been missing the deck must-have: the grill. I had seen a reasonably priced Kenmore version at KMart and decided that would be the one. We could easily fit the boxes in my car, then come home and assemble it. Not exactly. Continue reading The Kindness of Strangers

Iago, My Nemesis

Iago's cousin. Iago will not sit still for a photo op. He is too busy using the deck as a toilet then hiding, as if we won't know it is him.

So, you think living in paradise is all boating, fishing and sunning? Think again. Like home ownership everywhere, there can be certain issues: dealing with the historical society if you live in Old Town, hurricanes, and the one I did not count on, iguanas. I’ve named ours Iago.

Backwards

I spend a lot of time wearing workout clothes. Don’t judge me. There are many reasons for this. 1) I exercise a lot.  OK, not that much, but enough to warrant a full workout wardrobe. 2) They stretch, and I am carrying around a few extra pounds, so they are the only pants that really fit me. 3) Lululemon clothes rock. Seriously. You’d wear exclusively Lulu if you could, too. Flat seams, no chafing… Amazing. And this is where the problem began. Continue reading Backwards

The Candle-less Birthday

Happy Birthday

Now THAT is a good birthday celebration!

I love celebrating my birthday. Maybe it is because I was born on Christmas Eve, so people tend to forget about it (seriously, how can you forget someone’s birthday on Christmas Eve? I remember birthdays of people I only marginally know if it is on a big holiday.) Maybe it is because I am an only child and crave attention. Maybe I just like the candles and the guilt-free dessert. ..I’m pretty sure that is it. Continue reading The Candle-less Birthday

Swankey Palooza

Swankey Palooza - now at Higgs Beach

What started off as an idea to have a fun day at the beach has turned into an all-out music extravaganza. The folks behind Swankey, who are best known for putting on amazing weddings and other parties, are bringing a summer music-fest to town this weekend. If you are looking for something to do this is guaranteed to be a good time. Continue reading Swankey Palooza

Miami Food Trucks

Jefe's Fish Tacos

They’re trendy, they’re cheap and there is something for (almost) everyone. What am I talking about? Food trucks. There is something really appealing about eating food out of a truck while standing at a little table with strangers. I went to the Hard Rock Casino last night with some friends for the Miami Food Truck Rally. Once passed the headache-inducing parking structure and nausea-inducing, smoke-filled casino, we made it out to the parking lot where twenty food trucks, and infinite fried food possibilities await.  This all comes on the heels of my meeting with a nutritionist (more on that at a later date). Now, onto the food. Continue reading Miami Food Trucks
