A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

Me - with the cruiser bike - not looking at all like a Serious Biker.

I normally ride around Key West on my very inexpensive cruiser bike, which is a little too small for me, has coaster brakes and no gears. It is my kind of bike. I lock it all the time, as it could be gone in a minute otherwise. Naturally I was excited to learn that The Innsbruck had bikes we could borrow during our stay, free of charge. Bonus: they are cruisers. Yes, they had hand brakes and a few speeds, but nonetheless I would be on (somewhat) familiar ground.  Continue reading A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

The Cellar Diminishment Party

A small sampling of the wines

Every other year, a very generous couple hosts a blowout shindig at their house in suburban Chicago, called the Cellar Diminishment Party. They buy too much wine and need a little help in the consumption department. We are more than happy to oblige. I have been to the last three of these fun-fests. People come from all over the place for this party. The hosts whip out 150 bottles of wine and strategically place them around the house (Europe is in the basement, Pinot Noir on the piano…) along with water stations and dump buckets. 1997

On this day in 1997 (well, it was a Sunday, actually), FKGuy and I were married. It was a lovely, sunny South Florida day. Wait, scratch that. It was summer in South Florida and therefore rained. A lot. But the wedding was entirely indoors (it was August in Florida, I’m not a total fool) and it was a lot of fun. The band was great, the food was yummy, the wine sucked (it was a Kosher affair – what can you do?) and everyone had a good time. It doesn’t really seem like it was fourteen years ago.

On August 31, 1997 Princess Diana died. Continue reading 1997

New Cell Phone, Always a Drama (Thanks, Sprint)

This has been a week of inefficiencies. It is annoying, but it happens. I desperately needed a new cell phone so when Sprint came out with the Motorola Photon 4G, I jumped on it. It has all features a person could want, plus it is cool. I won’t get into the fact that Sprint now charges a $10 “premium data add-on” or, what I refer to as the “cool phone surcharge”. Some new phrasing would at least make my bill a little more entertaining. So, I get the phone, after a lot of calls, I activate the phone and that is where the trouble starts. Hair Gel Conspiracy

Who would think that something as inconsequential as hair gel would be a problem? Well, apparently it is. I use one of the most popular brands of hair care products on the market, Garnier Fructis. Why? They are really quite good. Plus, they are inexpensive. Win – win. Unless, of course, you have to travel. Continue reading Hair Gel Conspiracy

Unplanned

As I was making the Mainland-to-Monroe drive on Friday, I was reveling in the lack of plans I had for the weekend. I had just finished telling FKGuy about how I was looking forward to free museum weekend and some quality time in the pool with a cool beverage in hand. That was it. No other plans. Continue reading Unplanned

Danger Charters: A Great Sunset Sail

When people plan their vacations in Key West, it often involves a sunset cruise. After all, it is the postcard image of Key West, right? A beautiful sunset with a sailboat in the picture. So, last weekend, with guests in town, we took them on a sunset cruise. We chose Danger Charters Wind and Wine sail. Continue reading Danger Charters: A Great Sunset Sail

An Amazing Save

Kitten in the road looked a lot like this guy... only didn't give me enough time to get out my camera.

I seem to have a few of these feel good stories lately, and I love it. We left plenty of time for doing the Key West to Fort Lauderdale airport run with no scrambling necessary. The drive from Key West to the mainland was all going as expected: easy drive through the Keys, stop for coffee at Midway Cafe, more easy driving in the Keys and then rush hour traffic once we hit Kendall. Chevy Volt: Plug It In

The fine folks at Chevy brought over a new Volt last week for me to test drive. Admittedly, I was curious about how it would perform. The Volt is an electric/gas hybrid that runs primarily on a battery charge until that runs out, then it switches over to gas, and the transition is seamless.

I was really excited to try it out. Clearly, I am not the only curious one. As I was leaving Panera Bread, a guy came running out after me asking about the car, as he is thinking of buying one. He asked if it was a comfortable car. “See for yourself. Have a seat,” I invited. “Oh no, I can’t sit in your car,” he says. I let him know that it is, in fact, Chevy’s car, and he jumped right in to see how it felt. Continue reading Chevy Volt: Plug It In

The Kindness of Strangers

When I was little my mother always told me not to talk to strangers. She was – at least some of the time – wrong.

FKGuy and I are nicely settling in to our new house but have been missing the deck must-have: the grill. I had seen a reasonably priced Kenmore version at KMart and decided that would be the one. We could easily fit the boxes in my car, then come home and assemble it. Not exactly. Continue reading The Kindness of Strangers
