NCL Dawn

It has been a good week for ship tours. Over the weekend (which seemed very early after Jack’s birthday dinner) I had the opportunity to tour the Norwegian Dawn. NCL is known for “Freestyle” cruising, which means you can eat whenever you want and with whom you choose. There are two main dining rooms and a buffet, as well as specialty restaurants available for an additional charge. It is a really lovely ship. Continue reading NCL Dawn

Blowout Birthday Bash

The start of a really good night.

This weekend we were invited to our friend’s house for his birthday. As he is a wine geek, too, there were bound to be some good selections. Of course we RSVP’d that we would be coming, and as they live an hour away, we would also be staying over. (I know these people and the wine focus of the meal, there was no chance we would be driving home. Oh, and can we also bring Babka?) We arrived for one meal and one quick sleep with gifts, clothes to change into, a dog bed and, of course, the dog. Continue reading Blowout Birthday Bash

Eating (and Bowling) New York

It is a rare occurrence that I find myself in New York City with no plans. Normally I am scheduled all day and night, looking to squeeze in additions (Grom, anyone? How about a jaunt to H&M? I missed out on both this trip). But earlier this week, I was in just that situation, until my cousin’s bowling league game got pushed back a few hours. She immediately texted me: What are you doing for dinner? My response: Meeting you? We met at Txikito, a Basque restaurant on ninth avenue. Continue reading Eating (and Bowling) New York

Rain or Shine

Key West is an outdoorsy kind of place. Between the fishing, outdoor dining, beaches and more, Key West is known for the year round sunshine. So, what do you do if your one week of vacation happens when we are having a great downpour that lasts for five days straight? Fear not, that is a start. Continue reading Rain or Shine

A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

Me - with the cruiser bike - not looking at all like a Serious Biker.

I normally ride around Key West on my very inexpensive cruiser bike, which is a little too small for me, has coaster brakes and no gears. It is my kind of bike. I lock it all the time, as it could be gone in a minute otherwise. Naturally I was excited to learn that The Innsbruck had bikes we could borrow during our stay, free of charge. Bonus: they are cruisers. Yes, they had hand brakes and a few speeds, but nonetheless I would be on (somewhat) familiar ground.  Continue reading A Bike, A Beer and a Bailout

Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

I interrupt my vacation recap of eating, drinking, hiking and biking for a little public service announcement. September is the month restaurants dread most, as there are few tourists and the island is generally quiet. So this is the time of year when many restaurants close for vacation. Before you plan your next meal, take stock of who is closed. Here are some of the restaurants you won’t get to enjoy for a few more weeks. Continue reading Key West Restaurants: Closed for Vacation

Eating Chicago, Part II

The post-party breakfast.

You didn’t think the Chicago restaurant reviews would stop at one, did you? I had to eat the next day, too. We met friends that live in Chicago for a very early post-party brunch at Meli Cafe. I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the menu. Crepes? Sure. Pancakes? Of course. Homemade empanadas? Yes. Juice bar the size of a small country? That, too. How we ever managed to make a choice on breakfast is a mystery to me. Continue reading Eating Chicago, Part II

Eating Chicago

Since we were going to Chicago for the Cellar Diminishment Party anyway, naturally I had a list of potential restaurant choices for the following night. We would only be in Chicago for two nights, so that left us with two lunches and one dinner, plus the party. We landed in Chicago, hopped on the Orange Line L train towards downtown and immediately got a call from a friend. “Are you coming to the hotel before you go for pizza?” Indeed, we were. Unplanned

As I was making the Mainland-to-Monroe drive on Friday, I was reveling in the lack of plans I had for the weekend. I had just finished telling FKGuy about how I was looking forward to free museum weekend and some quality time in the pool with a cool beverage in hand. That was it. No other plans. Continue reading Unplanned

Fin, Key West: Take Two

Peach palm fritters... yum!

We decided to give Fin another try over the weekend as (a) it was my mother’s birthday and nothing says birthday better than fancy food and (b) most recently the owners have told me that the portions have been increased and we should really try it again. So we did, and once again I have a somewhat mixed review. First the good: Continue reading Fin, Key West: Take Two
