 Oooh, scary! Originally created as a way to stimulate the local economy during the off-season, Fantasy Fest has become world famous for the parties, fun and yes, body painting. (See this post for Florida Keys Girl’s Rules to Remember During Fantasy Fest).
Today is the kickoff for the week-long fun fest. For months, people have been campaigning for the titles of King and Queen (and this year: King-ette) of Fantasy Fest. It is “the big event” every year at Fantasy Fest. Yes, I am talking about the parade. For me it is the big disappointment of Fantasy Fest. Why? Well, for one thing, I am not a big fan of standing around waiting for stuff to happen, which is what goes on when there are thousands of people loitering on the street waiting for the floats to start. Once said floats do start meandering up the street, there is way too much time between each one, meaning I am stuck looking at all of the naked people coming dangerously close to touching me. Yuck.  Fantasy Fest is a week-long party. There is a headdress ball, a pet masquerade, toga parties, plaid parties, green parties and more. There is body painting, and even body painting contests. Some of the body paint looks like clothes. Others, not so much. Throughout the week there are many interesting costumes that clearly took a lot of time and effort to put together.

Every year on the Friday of Fantasy Fest, locals and some non-locals gather at the cemetery, in costume, and parade around the city. The group, several thousand strong, split in 2 groups and go in different directions, stopping at guesthouses along the route for (much needed in the heat) drinks.
