This weekend marks the second annual Key West Food and Wine Festival. It is a weekend of festivities and fun and draws a crowd from all over. We kicked off the weekend at the Barefoot Beach Party, followed by the Petronia neighborhood stroll. The weather was a perfect 65 degrees and sunny as we arrived at the Southernmost Beach Cafe for the beach party. Continue reading Food Wine and Fun

It is “the big event” every year at Fantasy Fest. Yes, I am talking about the parade. For me it is the big disappointment of Fantasy Fest. Why? Well, for one thing, I am not a big fan of standing around waiting for stuff to happen, which is what goes on when there are thousands of people loitering on the street waiting for the floats to start. Once said floats do start meandering up the street, there is way too much time between each one, meaning I am stuck looking at all of the naked people coming dangerously close to touching me. Yuck. The Miami Wine Fair, which happens every year in September or October, is generally an event filled with small wineries and producers looking for distribution in Florida. For the past couple of years I have been given tickets to the trade tasting, which happens early in the day before the consumer tasting. Continue reading Miami Wine Fair

People in Key West love to complain. “Too many tourists”, “Not enough tourists to make a living”, “Too many cruise ships”. I could go on and on. Last weekend marked the annual Poker Run, during which about 10,000 bikers come into town.
Some bikers remove their mufflers, so their motorcycles become louder. Some have giant tattoos. Some . . . → Read More: Poker Run

There are many reasons why I love Key West: I can walk everywhere, there is a lot to do, people are generally friendly and the crime is kept to a minimum. Most locals will read keysso.net before they have their morning coffee to see the latest. Keysso.net is the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department website. Best of . . . → Read More: Losing One’s Pants

This, and other pearls of wisdom, like “don’t cut your toenails while drunk”, were interspersed with the music last night at the Green Parrot. Part of the Key West Songwriters Festival going on this weekend, Robert Earl Keen performed to a full house, and a large crowd gathered outside on the sidewalk. The crowd was a . . . → Read More: Don’t Fry Bacon Naked

Life is simply too short to not enjoy yourself. Certain things we do because we must: grocery shopping, laundry, work. Other things we do for fun: bowling, sporting events and concerts. Last weekend was the opening show for Jimmy Buffett’s Under the Big Top Tour, and it was great fun.

Key West is a funny place. If you’ve been here once you know that. We have an extremely liberal population, a huge gay population and a “come as you are” attitude. Then there is “Sign Guy” who holds up a sign with his opinion about what his god thinks of the gay community. He gets in . . . → Read More: Independence

This year marked the 16th annual Master Chef Competition benefiting the MARC House (Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens). The Westin provided a great location on the pier, complete with tents and far too few places to sit, or even lean.
Chefs from all over Key West were in attendance hoping to win the coveted 1st place . . . → Read More: Iron Chef, Key West
