Labor Day Weekend

As the summer comes to an end, Floridians are hoping for a breath of cooler winter air. I assume we will be waiting another three months for that. Meanwhile, enjoy the bar-b-ques, get togethers and long weekend.

This weekend in Key West is Brewfest, a beer-filled festival. I know what you’re thinking: Key West is always a . . . → Read More: Labor Day Weekend

The First Time

My sister-in-law is coming to visit this weekend and it will be her first trip to Key West. Naturally, I’ve been trying to plan some fun activities for the weekend. She is coming with my mother-in-law, who has been here before, so I am coming up with things we can do that both will enjoy. Continue reading The First Time

It is that time of year again… Divers dust off the old gear (which they have hopefully tested) and race out to the waters surrounding the Florida Keys (and into the mainland) to catch Florida spiny lobsters. Why is it a mini season? Well, these two days are for recreational divers to grab some crustaceans before the commercial lobster season begins on August 6. Continue reading Lobster Mini Season

Restaurant Recap

After almost two years of writing this blog I have reviewed 57 restaurants in the Florida Keys, 44 of which are (or, in some cases, were) in Key West. During this time, I have revisited many of the places already reviewed. In most instances, the food and service have been consistent each time. In other cases, not so much. In a couple of rare cases, my opinion has completely changed. So, first the good news. Continue reading Restaurant Recap

We tend to think that when season ends and the snowbirds return to the north that the fun stops in Key West. Well, the snowbirds think that, anyway. The summer in Key West is hot, sometimes rainy and fun-filled. Continue reading Key West Upcoming Events

The Sun-Sentinel has once again announced the Best of Blogs winners in spectacular fashion. Ocean Prime: Overpriced in Aventura

The absurdly good eggs

I’m pretty cheap about a lot of things. Eating is not one of them. Buying groceries or dining out, I always want quality ingredients and a good preparation. Generally, that means spending. Earlier this week we went to Ocean Prime in Aventura, just north of Miami, and the overall feeling upon leaving was “boy, that was expensive”. It was $300 for four people with $40 in corkage fees (we didn’t buy any other drinks besides coffee). Continue reading Ocean Prime: Overpriced in Aventura

Boondocks, Ramrod Key

Boondocks is one of those places I always drive by, but don’t stop at because it is generally inconvenient to where I am going: Key West. Located at Mile Marker 27.5, it is generally further than I am willing to go when there is an event there, or I am in the neighborhood at the wrong times. Last week, a friend and I were driving by at lunchtime and decided to stop in.

Restaurant Review: Fin

Fin is the second restaurant opened in Key West by the team behind Blackfin Bistro on Duval Street. Fin’s menu is made up entirely of small “tasting” plates, yet the menu is broken up into Beginning, Middle an Fin, as if there were appetizers and entrees. Every morsel of food we had was spectacularly good. Sadly, there was a mere morsel on each plate. Continue reading Restaurant Review: Fin

Restaurant Review: Kyushu Japanese Restaurant

Note: Yesterday there was a fire at Kyushu, so we will have to wait and see what the status of this restaurant will be.

After my unfortunate break up with Ambrosia, I had a hankering for sushi. Naturally, it was the coldest day of the year, so I bundled in my North Face jacket, gloves and a fleece headband to head out and enjoy some raw fish. Continue reading Restaurant Review: Kyushu Japanese Restaurant
