I get a lot of mail from readers of my blog, and I love it. Everything from questions like “Where is the closest crossfit gym?” (Miami) to “I’m planning a wedding and need a caterer” (Call Kristin at Pear Affairs. She is the best wedding planner around.) But when I got the following question “Have you ever created a list of wine friendly restaurants in Key West?” I knew the sender was my kind of person. Continue reading New Friends

Emilio’s Trattoria is the newest restaurant from the folks that opened Cafe Ragazzi in Surfside many years ago. The interior is clean, modern and beautiful. Of course, I have the same pendant lights in my house, so it is definitely my taste. The thing I loved most about Cafe Ragazzi were the pastas. Homemade noodles, amazing sauces and porcini mushrooms with loads of butter. It was enough butter to kill you, but at least you would die happy. Continue reading Emilio’s Trattoria, Bal Harbour, FL

The start of a really good night.
This weekend we were invited to our friend’s house for his birthday. As he is a wine geek, too, there were bound to be some good selections. Of course we RSVP’d that we would be coming, and as they live an hour away, we would also be staying over. (I know these people and the wine focus of the meal, there was no chance we would be driving home. Oh, and can we also bring Babka?) We arrived for one meal and one quick sleep with gifts, clothes to change into, a dog bed and, of course, the dog. Continue reading Blowout Birthday Bash

After almost two years of writing this blog I have reviewed 57 restaurants in the Florida Keys, 44 of which are (or, in some cases, were) in Key West. During this time, I have revisited many of the places already reviewed. In most instances, the food and service have been consistent each time. In other cases, not so much. In a couple of rare cases, my opinion has completely changed. So, first the good news. Continue reading Restaurant Recap

We had some wine drinking friends in town, but the only day we had that we could go out and enjoy a nice meal with some good wines was last night. Why? Passover. Or as I like to call it, The almost carb-less holiday that seems to drag on forever. That is what happens to me when I am denied pasta, bread, anything with flour and rice. You know all of the things that you are not really supposed to eat anyway. I can’t imagine if I had to give up any of those things for six weeks for Lent. Oy. Instead I subsisted on brownies, almond horns and macaroons, all homemade by my mother, with the occasional salad thrown in for good measure. Somehow I managed to not gain any weight during brownie-fest. Nonetheless, I was eager to get out of the house for an evening of yumminess. One of my dear readers often complains that of all the fabulous places I eat, not one of them is near his house. This one is for you. Il Mercato Cafe is on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, in the Publix shopping center in Hallandale, FL. The restaurant has only been open for six months, but already they seem to be doing quite well and have a loyal following. It is easy to see why. If you have been reading for a while, you know that one of my absolute favorite restaurants, if not THE favorite, is Azur. Why? The food is great, the service is warm and friendly and the atmosphere is inviting. Everyone we have taken there has loved it. (That is quite a few people considering that we had company for about 95% of the weekends through May).
Michael and Drew, the owners, do a great job with everything, especially the gnocchi. You can get it four different ways in either a half or full portion. Continue reading A Great Bargain: Why I Love the Summer

I had not been to Seven Fish in at least five years. Why? It’s not the food, which is always excellent. It was this: while the food and service were good, I always felt rushed.
Recently, we were at the Flaming Buoy Filet Co and were talking with one of the owners, Fred, who also happens to . . . → Read More: Restaurant Review: Seven Fish

The food is much better than it looks in these less than stellar cell phone photos. La Trattoria, at 524 Duval, is a delightful oasis in the middle of the action.
However, in my opinion, they have committed a truly heinous sin: no vintages on the wine list. When you sell $20-40 bottles of crap, nobody expects . . . → Read More: La Trattoria

My new favorite restaurant in Key West has to be Azur. The friendly, yet refined atmosphere is reason enough to go. But the food… oh my! There are few places that have food that I dream about and Azur is one of those. The first few times I was there, I had the gnocchi in various . . . → Read More: Need gnocchi now!
