The Kindness of Strangers

When I was little my mother always told me not to talk to strangers. She was – at least some of the time – wrong.

FKGuy and I are nicely settling in to our new house but have been missing the deck must-have: the grill. I had seen a reasonably priced Kenmore version at KMart and decided that would be the one. We could easily fit the boxes in my car, then come home and assemble it. Not exactly. Continue reading The Kindness of Strangers

Living in a Small Town: Jury Duty

At first it was a loud exhale, followed by an eye roll, followed by a tirade of “who has time for this crap”, culminating with the “it’s my civic duty, I can suck it up for a day or two.” Yes, I am talking about Jury Duty and receiving the dreaded summons in the mail. I was complaining, loudly, about it to several people at the tennis court when one of my friends announced that she, too, had been called for jury duty on the same day.

Well, things were certainly looking up for me. Jury duty, in Key West, with a friend couldn’t be all that bad, could it? Actually it was rather entertaining. Continue reading Living in a Small Town: Jury Duty

Need a Laugh?

The People’s Theater of Key West is a local community theater group, which includes The Improvables, an improv group. They have performed the last two weekends at The Bottlecap and will be appearing once again this weekend.

For the show, the group is divided into two teams with a referee awarding points and trying, sometimes in vain, to keep the actors in line. Continue reading Need a Laugh?

As seen in Key West and South Florida

The motto of Key West is “One Human Family” which generally means that people should be nice to each other. More often than not, they are (unlike the rest of South Florida). Aside from generally being nice, Key Westers tend to not take things too seriously. Consider these signs seen recently on a local business:

A compliment or an insult?

People often say things that sound like a compliment, but really is an insult. “Oh, you cut your hair. It looks SO much better.” Translation: Your hair looked like crap. I’m so glad you did something about it.

How about this one: “Oh, those pants are so flattering.” Translation: Normally, you look like a fat cow. Today, . . . → Read More: A compliment or an insult?

Liar, Liar

I have been talking about how great service is on the Seabourn Spirit. I have not spent so much time, however, on the entertainment on board. Because it is a small ship, entertainment options are limited. No ice bars or circus acts here. But there is free flowing champagne, all the time, and a very talented . . . → Read More: Liar, Liar

A Bit of Humor

Very few things surprise me. Every once in a while someone does something so egregious that it is shocking, but more often than not, things are just funny (like the woman who wore three not-s0-strategically placed drug store bows to Fantasy Fest). That was it. Three bows and some thigh highs. It was not a good . . . → Read More: A Bit of Humor

A Good Laugh

Last night I saw Jeff Dunham at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, FL. The show was set up sort of oddly: first Guitar Guy (as the Dunham character’s call him), Brian Haner, came out and performed a few songs/bits. He was very entertaining and performed for about 15 minutes, at which point an announcement . . . → Read More: A Good Laugh
