Success!

After my last effort to renew my driver’s license failed miserably, I had to try again. Really, I would have just given up, but I do need to be able to legally drive, so I persevered. It was a beautiful day, so I opted to take my bike for the almost three mile journey.

Key West DMV

As jury duty in Key West was a barrel of laughs – and certainly more entertaining than any other jury duty I have had either in Fort Lauderdale (where a woman in THE HOLDING ROOM sat next to me then told me that my sending an email was disturbing her) or in New York (where at least there are good lunch options while you are in the middle of a trial). Naturally, I figured DMV would be a hoot, too. Not so much. Continue reading Key West DMV

Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, Key West

Smokin' margaritas

I had been meaning to check out the SmokinTuna since they opened a couple of months ago, but just did not have the opportunity. Then, last weekend, after I had registered for the Hogs Breath 5K, as we were making our way up Duval, we saw a guy outside advertising the Smokin’ Tuna. Normally, I would have ignored him and kept walking, but he said the magic words… “You can bring your dog.”  Babka loved the idea. Continue reading Smokin’ Tuna Saloon, Key West

Geiger Key Marina & Restaurant

The view from our table... not too shabby.

Last week, to kick of Eating Key West weekend (which, much to my dismay, was not a universally celebrated event), we stopped at Geiger Key Marina & Smokehouse for lunch. While we missed the Sunday B-B-Q day, we did enjoy a wonderful lunch there. Continue reading Geiger Key Marina & Restaurant

Eating Key West

Normally, I review one restaurant or meal at a time. This past weekend, however, deserves a recap of its own. Since my cousin was coming to town and we have many of the same interests, mainly revolving around eating, drinking and a love-hate relationship with running, I planned the eating and drinking (and a little running) tour of Key West. Continue reading Eating Key West

Hog’s Breath Hog Trot 5K

Babka at the Hog's Breath with Alison.

For the past eighteen years the Hog’s Breath has put on the Hog Trot, a Thanksgiving weekend 5K race. This was only my second one. I signed up late, was congested and had both wine and margaritas the night before. There was no way it was going to go well for me.  Continue reading Hog’s Breath Hog Trot 5K

Martin’s, Key West

Weinerschnitzel Benedict

My friends have raved about the Sunday brunch at Martin’s for quite a while, so this weekend we decided to give it a try. We arrived around noon and were seated in the back patio. There are a few seating choices: indoors in the dining room, out front watching the passers-by on Duval Street, the back patio and the center, lounge-y part complete with low tables and chairs. I liked our choice. Continue reading Martin’s, Key West

Q.P.R.

It’s a great QPR” is often a term bandied about by wine geeks in search of something to have with a mid-week pizza. But I think it applies to just about everything in life. QPR stands for quality price ratio. So, let’s say you drink a crappy bottle of wine, but it only cost $10. Nope. Not a good QPR, because the Q (quality) part is missing from the equation. A $50 bottle of wine, however, might be a great QPR because the quality is great. Bonus points if it has increased in value since your purchase.

Even though I buy lottery tickets (because I am convinced that I will win), I really despise wasting money, so I am always looking for the good QPR. Continue reading Q.P.R.

Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

Zonta 5K, where I was very, very slow

This weekend was the 20th annual Meeting of the Minds (MOTM), the annual Parrothead gathering in Key West. No, I did not attend. However, every year there is a rumor that Jimmy Buffett will be playing a show sometime during the weekend. Every. Single. Year. It hasn’t been true in quite a while. Until last Friday. Of course, these things are generally kept under wraps until the last minute, so where was I for the 4:00 Friday show on Duval street? In my car. Listening to JD Spradlin yap about it on Radio Margaritaville. Continue reading Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

I Heart New York

Looking south from Top of the Rock, New York City

Image via Wikipedia

I lived in New York City for six years after college (a while ago) and loved every minute of it. Well, most minutes of it. The part where I was run over by a taxi on my way to work? Not so much. The constant things to do and places to go? Absolutely. Continue reading I Heart New York
