Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

Zonta 5K, where I was very, very slow

This weekend was the 20th annual Meeting of the Minds (MOTM), the annual Parrothead gathering in Key West. No, I did not attend. However, every year there is a rumor that Jimmy Buffett will be playing a show sometime during the weekend. Every. Single. Year. It hasn’t been true in quite a while. Until last Friday. Of course, these things are generally kept under wraps until the last minute, so where was I for the 4:00 Friday show on Duval street? In my car. Listening to JD Spradlin yap about it on Radio Margaritaville. Continue reading Zonta 5K and Meeting of the Minds

Swankey Palooza

Swankey Palooza - now at Higgs Beach

What started off as an idea to have a fun day at the beach has turned into an all-out music extravaganza. The folks behind Swankey, who are best known for putting on amazing weddings and other parties, are bringing a summer music-fest to town this weekend. If you are looking for something to do this is guaranteed to be a good time. Continue reading Swankey Palooza

d’Vine: The Wine Bar

I was called out on my post last week on The Porch for it not actually being the newest wine bar in Key West. In fact, at the time of posting, it was the newest wine bar, but that was last week.

This week, the newest wine bar is d’Vine, at The Gardens Hotel. The gimmick is the Enomatic machines “First in the Keys” announced the grand opening flyer. But will it live past the gimmick? Continue reading d’Vine: The Wine Bar

Don’t Fry Bacon Naked

This, and other pearls of wisdom, like “don’t cut your toenails while drunk”, were interspersed with the music last night at the Green Parrot. Part of the Key West Songwriters Festival going on this weekend, Robert Earl Keen performed to a full house, and a large crowd gathered outside on the sidewalk. The crowd was a . . . → Read More: Don’t Fry Bacon Naked

Lighten Up

Life is simply too short to not enjoy yourself. Certain things we do because we must: grocery shopping,  laundry, work. Other things we do for fun: bowling, sporting events and concerts. Last weekend was the opening show for Jimmy Buffett’s Under the Big Top Tour, and it was great fun.

People that go to Jimmy Buffett . . . → Read More: Lighten Up

The Martha Stewart of Tailgating

Rewind 365 days. Florida Keys Guy and I, along with another couple drove up to Tampa to see Jimmy Buffet in concert. Acting responsibly, we stayed at a hotel with a shuttle service to the concert. Enter 1.75L of Patron Silver tequila.

We arrived at the amphitheater parking lot with no car, but oodles of food and . . . → Read More: The Martha Stewart of Tailgating

Sunny Day

You probably never heard of Ilo Ferreira. Neither had I. One day, several months ago, I heard a guy singing a catchy tune on (where else?) Radio Margaritaville. My little radio display simply read “Ilo”.

As it turns out, Jimmy Buffett was hanging out in a bar in the Cape Verde Islands last year when he . . . → Read More: Sunny Day

Livin’ the Dream

I listen to Radio Margaritaville almost exclusively in my car. One of the things I like about it – aside from the abundance of Jimmy Buffett music I get to hear every day – is that I hear new bands frequently. Some are clearly better than others. One song I found myself singing along with is . . . → Read More: Livin’ the Dream

See Food

As you know by now, the people of Key West get rather excited about a lot of things. Take, for example, the Christmas parade, just a month after the Fantasy Fest parade. You may recall the Grinch sitting next to me. Maybe he was still hung over from Fantasy Fest. Granted the two parades don’t have . . . → Read More: See Food

Ice, Ice Baby

In the space that formerly housed Alice’s restaurant, now stands The Keys piano bar. People in the crowd get up and sing, the waiter gets up to sing, patrons sing along with the piano player. Of course, in typical Key West fashion, a song was introduced with this opening line: You know guys, if you are . . . → Read More: Ice, Ice Baby
