Captain’s Tavern, Miami

The incredibly yummy tuna melt

Captain’s Tavern is older than I am. It was founded in 1971 and I’m pretty sure the decor has not been updated since then. Inside it is dark and dreary, although service tends to be friendly. Fortunately, the carpet is not the star of the show here, the fish is. The menu is huge and when specials are taken into account, it is quite a feat to just get through the selections and make a decision. Continue reading Captain’s Tavern, Miami

Summer Specials

This image shows a red wine glass.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about summer and why it rocks.  This past weekend, we enjoyed dinner at Blackfin Bistro and took advantage of their 50% off all wine special. This means half off glasses or bottles of wine. Anything on the list. This is not a local’s deal, either. Anyone can take advantage of this. How long will it last? I have no idea. Get there while you can to enjoy some really great food combined with wine deals.

The Candle-less Birthday

Happy Birthday

Now THAT is a good birthday celebration!

I love celebrating my birthday. Maybe it is because I was born on Christmas Eve, so people tend to forget about it (seriously, how can you forget someone’s birthday on Christmas Eve? I remember birthdays of people I only marginally know if it is on a big holiday.) Maybe it is because I am an only child and crave attention. Maybe I just like the candles and the guilt-free dessert. ..I’m pretty sure that is it. Continue reading The Candle-less Birthday

Fin, Key West: Take Two

Peach palm fritters... yum!

We decided to give Fin another try over the weekend as (a) it was my mother’s birthday and nothing says birthday better than fancy food and (b) most recently the owners have told me that the portions have been increased and we should really try it again. So we did, and once again I have a somewhat mixed review. First the good: Continue reading Fin, Key West: Take Two

Why Summer Rocks

Living in Florida, we tend to thrive in winter – warm days, cool evenings and very little rain. What’s not to love? Then summer shows up and smacks you in the face with heat and 95% humidity everyday. We retreat indoors to air conditioned comfort while the rest of the country is basking in end-of-snow warmth. We also tend to go other places in the summer – the mountains of North Carolina are a popular getaway.

But what a lot of people forget is that Key West is great in the summer. Why? I’m glad you asked. Continue reading Why Summer Rocks

Restaurant Recap

End of US highway 1 in Key West, Florida

Image via Wikipedia

After almost two years of writing this blog I have reviewed 57 restaurants in the Florida Keys, 44 of which are (or, in some cases, were) in Key West. During this time, I have revisited many of the places already reviewed. In most instances, the food and service have been consistent each time. In other cases, not so much. In a couple of rare cases, my opinion has completely changed. So, first the good news. Continue reading Restaurant Recap

Miscommunication

When we communicate with others, either in person or electronically, there are numerous opportunities for miscommunication. Sometimes it is simply a matter of a person not knowing what they want. I often have clients tell me they want to go on a fancy vacation. When I quote them a price, I am met with “WHAT???” and I am forced to explain that the Ritz-Carlton, much to their chagrin, costs more than a Holiday Inn Express. Other times miscommunication takes more humorous forms. Continue reading Miscommunication

Blue Heaven, Key West

Over the weekend we ate spectacularly well while celebrating our friend’s big five-oh. After an awesome dinner at The Flaming Buoy and killer hogfish sandwiches at Hogfish Bar and Grill, we ended up at Blue Heaven for dinner the next night. I hadn’t been there for dinner in years, and now I know why. As it had been a while, I called to find out the corkage policy and was told “we normally charge $15 per bottle.” (You see where this is going, don’t you?) Continue reading Blue Heaven, Key West

Sweet Tea’s, Key West

Housed in the former location of the Keys Piano Bar (good riddance, I say), is now Sweet Tea’s. They did not do much to the interior, which works, as the decor was good already. They even left the raised platform that formerly housed the piano (now it houses a few tables). The columns are painted with chalkboard paint and are used to display the specials.

Dante’s, Key West

Imagine yourself on a hot and humid day, just aching to swim in a nice, cool pool. Sure, you could go to the beach, but then you would get all sandy and need to pack a picnic lunch to bring along. It requires a little forward thinking, or at least a trip to the store before heading to the sand. Happily, Dante’s provides a nice alternative – huge pool and surprisingly good food.
