Talisker on Main: The Wine Dinner

The Utah wine crowd is a fun one. I know, you wouldn’t think it, but it is true. We get together for some sort of wine dinner every time we are in town, which is sadly limited to once a year. This year’s festivities took place upstairs in a private room at Talisker on Main. We set out the fifteen or so (who’s counting?) bottles of Syrah from all over the world and started popping the corks. Continue reading Talisker on Main: The Wine Dinner

Ski In, Ski Out… to Lunch

For me the skiing is all about one thing. Powder? Nope. Lovely groomed trails? Well, sometimes. Lunch? All the time. I have now worked into each Deer Valley trip a lunch at the new-last-year JG Grill. As is Jean Georges. Yes, that Jean Georges. I ski there from the Deer Hollow run – a lovely, easy green – and while I technically can ski back down to the bottom of the mountain, this time opted for the funicular. I am looking forward to getting the knee fixed and making the skiing all about skiing next year (and maybe still a little about the lunch). Continue reading Ski In, Ski Out… to Lunch

Restaurant Review: The Mariposa at Deer Valley

We go to Utah usually once or twice per year. We visit with friends. We ski or hike, depending on season (usually the former), and we eat really well. One of the places on my must-eat list each year is The Mariposa at Deer Valley. It is a great dining experience with wonderful food, a beautiful atmosphere and generally good service. Ski Utah… well, really, Eat Utah

FKGuy looking good on the slopes of Deer Valley

Ski-fest 2011 is over. In my case, maybe it could be called sit-around-in-ski-boots-fest. I did not do an incredible amount of skiing over the course of my five available ski days. I was pretty gung-ho, given what good shape I am in from all this running. The one flaw in this logic: the torn meniscus in my knee. It has been painful, and I have surgery scheduled for March 15, but I figured I could get a few good ski days in first. After all, I already had the plane tickets. Off to Freeze My Butt Off… Back Next Week!

I am leaving my comfort zone (flat, warm, sunny Florida) and heading to Utah to ski at Deer Valley (freeze my butt off in excessive amounts of clothing) for a week. I am trading flip flops for my new and awesome ski boots.

I am pushing my poor knee to the limit . . . → Read More: Off to Freeze My Butt Off… Back Next Week!

The Gloves Are ON

If I am going to be cold, I might as well be skiing

There is a reason people live in Florida: warm, sunny days, complete with an ocean breeze. Images of sitting outside sipping a frozen cocktail dance in my head. Alas, those images will exist only in mind, at least in the short term.

Yesterday I got up for my morning run and it was 38 degrees, with a wind chill of 27. You would think I am vacationing in New York or Chicago, but no, this is South Florida, where you are supposed to be able to run in shorts year round. The fact that there is even a wind chill factor is a little disturbing. Continue reading The Gloves Are ON

Livin’ the Dream

I listen to Radio Margaritaville almost exclusively in my car. One of the things I like about it – aside from the abundance of Jimmy Buffett music I get to hear every day – is that I hear new bands frequently. Some are clearly better than others. One song I found myself singing along with is . . . → Read More: Livin’ the Dream

7 Years of Suffering

People from Florida are not cut out for winter activities. I can hear my friends calling now “What do you mean we can’ t ski because we’re from Florida?” First of all, most of you are from someplace else. Second of all, I did not say we CAN’T ski, rather it doesn’t come as naturally to . . . → Read More: 7 Years of Suffering
