Little Palm Island

Little Palm Island is the place people dream of when they picture the idyllic Florida Keys. Secluded and three miles off the coast, Little Palm Island is only accessible by boat. We arrived at the ferry parking lot and were greeted warmly by the attendant. After about three minutes we were escorted to the boat with four other people, all of whom appeared to be spending one or more nights (the suitcases gave them away.)

Hog’s Breath Hog Trot 5K

Babka at the Hog's Breath with Alison.

For the past eighteen years the Hog’s Breath has put on the Hog Trot, a Thanksgiving weekend 5K race. This was only my second one. I signed up late, was congested and had both wine and margaritas the night before. There was no way it was going to go well for me.  Continue reading Hog’s Breath Hog Trot 5K

I Heart New York

Looking south from Top of the Rock, New York City

I lived in New York City for six years after college (a while ago) and loved every minute of it. Well, most minutes of it. The part where I was run over by a taxi on my way to work? Not so much. The constant things to do and places to go? Absolutely. Continue reading I Heart New York

Rain or Shine

Key West is an outdoorsy kind of place. Between the fishing, outdoor dining, beaches and more, Key West is known for the year round sunshine. So, what do you do if your one week of vacation happens when we are having a great downpour that lasts for five days straight? Fear not, that is a start. Continue reading Rain or Shine

Why Summer Rocks

Living in Florida, we tend to thrive in winter – warm days, cool evenings and very little rain. What’s not to love? Then summer shows up and smacks you in the face with heat and 95% humidity everyday. We retreat indoors to air conditioned comfort while the rest of the country is basking in end-of-snow warmth. We also tend to go other places in the summer – the mountains of North Carolina are a popular getaway.

But what a lot of people forget is that Key West is great in the summer. Why? I’m glad you asked. Continue reading Why Summer Rocks

Christmas 2010

As one would expect we did not have a white Christmas in Key West (fortunately), but we did have a perfect weather day with bright blue skies, no clouds and no humidity. My day started with a few sets of tennis, followed by a potluck picnic with the tennis crowd at Bayview Park. There was ham, potatoes, stuffing, salads, smoked fish and more. That is all before we got to the dessert table – multiple key lime pies, brownie cupcakes with peanut butter frosting (made by yours truly), gingerbread cake, cookies and more. FKGuy did some noshing then went back for more tennis. Me? I played tennis, worked up an appetite and never got myself back on the courts after lunch.

The Gloves Are ON

If I am going to be cold, I might as well be skiing

There is a reason people live in Florida: warm, sunny days, complete with an ocean breeze. Images of sitting outside sipping a frozen cocktail dance in my head. Alas, those images will exist only in mind, at least in the short term.

Yesterday I got up for my morning run and it was 38 degrees, with a wind chill of 27. You would think I am vacationing in New York or Chicago, but no, this is South Florida, where you are supposed to be able to run in shorts year round. The fact that there is even a wind chill factor is a little disturbing. Continue reading The Gloves Are ON

Go Fish

Every week for the past year I have asked my friend when he was going to take me fishing. Every time I ask the answer was always the same “When the wind is good”. I would ask “Well, when do you think the wind might be good on a weekend?”

This weekend the wind was good, the . . . → Read More: Go Fish

A Good Cause and a Rockin’ Good Time

A chilly afternoon, and downright cold night could not deter people from the Lazy Lakes RV Resort last weekend. These were not just northerners on a camping trip. Lazy Lakes hosted a charity concert benefiting Habitat for Humanity with a full roster of well known acts. Not to mention the food and beer that was . . . → Read More: A Good Cause and a Rockin’ Good Time

7 Years of Suffering

People from Florida are not cut out for winter activities. I can hear my friends calling now “What do you mean we can’ t ski because we’re from Florida?” First of all, most of you are from someplace else. Second of all, I did not say we CAN’T ski, rather it doesn’t come as naturally to . . . → Read More: 7 Years of Suffering
