It is a rare occurrence that I find myself in New York City with no plans. Normally I am scheduled all day and night, looking to squeeze in additions (Grom, anyone? How about a jaunt to H&M? I missed out on both this trip). But earlier this week, I was in just that situation, until my cousin’s bowling league game got pushed back a few hours. You didn’t think the Chicago restaurant reviews would stop at one, did you? I had to eat the next day, too. We met friends that live in Chicago for a very early post-party brunch at Meli Cafe. I was overwhelmed by the sheer size of the menu. Crepes? Sure. Pancakes? Of course. Homemade empanadas? Yes. Juice bar the size of a small country? That, too. The Cellar Diminishment Party

Every other year, a very generous couple hosts a blowout shindig at their house in suburban Chicago, called the Cellar Diminishment Party. They buy too much wine and need a little help in the consumption department. We are more than happy to oblige. I have been to the last three of these fun-fests. People come from all over the place for this party. The hosts whip out 150 bottles of wine and strategically place them around the house (Europe is in the basement, Pinot Noir on the piano…) along with water stations and dump buckets. The Cafe, Key West

I’m always a little leery of “vegetarian” places. I’ve been to several in other places where either they try too hard to be a “real” restaurant or they are just mediocre places to get tofu. A couple of weeks ago I wrote about summer and why it rocks. This past weekend, we enjoyed dinner at Blackfin Bistro and took advantage of their 50% off all wine special. This means half off glasses or bottles of wine. Anything on the list. This is not a local’s deal, either. Anyone can take advantage of this. How long will it last? I have no idea. Get there while you can to enjoy some really great food combined with wine deals.

The Candle-less Birthday

I love celebrating my birthday. Maybe it is because I was born on Christmas Eve, so people tend to forget about it (seriously, how can you forget someone’s birthday on Christmas Eve? I remember birthdays of people I only marginally know if it is on a big holiday.) Maybe it is because I am an only child and crave attention.
