Miscommunication

When we communicate with others, either in person or electronically, there are numerous opportunities for miscommunication. Sometimes it is simply a matter of a person not knowing what they want. I often have clients tell me they want to go on a fancy vacation. When I quote them a price, I am met with “WHAT???” and I am forced to explain that the Ritz-Carlton, much to their chagrin, costs more than a Holiday Inn Express. Other times miscommunication takes more humorous forms. Continue reading Miscommunication

Blue Heaven, Key West

Over the weekend we ate spectacularly well while celebrating our friend’s big five-oh. After an awesome dinner at The Flaming Buoy and killer hogfish sandwiches at Hogfish Bar and Grill, we ended up at Blue Heaven for dinner the next night. I hadn’t been there for dinner in years, and now I know why. As it had been a while, I called to find out the corkage policy and was told “we normally charge $15 per bottle.” (You see where this is going, don’t you?) Continue reading Blue Heaven, Key West

Birthday Meals

Today is Florida Keys Guy’s birthday. I got him a shirt from Lululemon, which he loves, and I will be making dinner for just a few people in honor of the occasion. Birthday boy has requested one of his favorite pasta dishes, so that is what we will have. Cacio e pepe is about the simplest thing to make: pici pasta (or, since it is impossibly hard to find in Florida, bucatini or some other type of thick spaghetti) with pecorino cheese and loads of grated black pepper. Easy, yet so delicious. Continue reading Birthday Meals

Point 5 Lounge, Key West: What’s the Point?

Key West is a funny town. You can drink until the wee hours of the morning, but try to get a good meal late at night and you are pretty much out of luck. Let me clarify: by “decent meal” I mean one that is served (not a walk-up counter or take-out), cooked to order and not served in a loud bar where most people are only drinking. Yes, you can get good food at some of those places, but that is not what I am after. Most restaurants in Key West close about 10:00 PM on the weekends. After a great evening of Short Attention Span Theater, we headed to Nine One Five’s upstairs lounge, Point 5, as it always seems to be busy on the later side.

Closing Time

I almost always miss subtlety. I often even miss hints that are not too subtle. For the second time in two weeks I found myself leaving a restaurant a little too late. Last time, it was at Il Mercato and they were cleaning the floors around us. This time it was Himmarshee Bar and Grill in Fort Lauderdale and I tried – but failed – to usher out the last of my friends when the restaurant staff started turning off the lights. It was another night of wine geeks, the impetus for the meal being a friend – and fellow wine geek – in from Texas, and it was a blast. Continue reading Closing Time

Wine Drinkers Cometh (or, You’re bringing port? I’ll be there!)

We had some wine drinking friends in town, but the only day we had that we could go out and enjoy a nice meal with some good wines was last night. Why? Passover. Or as I like to call it, The almost carb-less holiday that seems to drag on forever. That is what happens to me when I am denied pasta, bread, anything with flour and rice. You know all of the things that you are not really supposed to eat anyway. I can’t imagine if I had to give up any of those things for six weeks for Lent. Oy. Instead I subsisted on brownies, almond horns and macaroons, all homemade by my mother, with the occasional salad thrown in for good measure. Somehow I managed to not gain any weight during brownie-fest. Nonetheless, I was eager to get out of the house for an evening of yumminess. Talisker on Main: The Wine Dinner

The Utah wine crowd is a fun one. I know, you wouldn’t think it, but it is true. We get together for some sort of wine dinner every time we are in town, which is sadly limited to once a year. This year’s festivities took place upstairs in a private room at Talisker on Main. We set out the fifteen or so (who’s counting?) bottles of Syrah from all over the world and started popping the corks. Continue reading Talisker on Main: The Wine Dinner

Ski In, Ski Out… to Lunch

For me the skiing is all about one thing. Powder? Nope. Lovely groomed trails? Well, sometimes. Lunch? All the time. I have now worked into each Deer Valley trip a lunch at the new-last-year JG Grill. As is Jean Georges. Yes, that Jean Georges. I ski there from the Deer Hollow run – a lovely, easy green – and while I technically can ski back down to the bottom of the mountain, this time opted for the funicular. I am looking forward to getting the knee fixed and making the skiing all about skiing next year (and maybe still a little about the lunch). Continue reading Ski In, Ski Out… to Lunch

Ski Utah… well, really, Eat Utah

FKGuy looking good on the slopes of Deer Valley

Ski-fest 2011 is over. In my case, maybe it could be called sit-around-in-ski-boots-fest. I did not do an incredible amount of skiing over the course of my five available ski days. I was pretty gung-ho, given what good shape I am in from all this running. The one flaw in this logic: the torn meniscus in my knee. It has been painful, and I have surgery scheduled for March 15, but I figured I could get a few good ski days in first. After all, I already had the plane tickets. Off to Freeze My Butt Off… Back Next Week!

I am leaving my comfort zone (flat, warm, sunny Florida) and heading to Utah to ski at Deer Valley (freeze my butt off in excessive amounts of clothing) for a week. I am trading flip flops for my new and awesome ski boots.

I am pushing my poor knee to the limit . . . → Read More: Off to Freeze My Butt Off… Back Next Week!
