Shula Burger, Islamorada

The catchphrase is “If you love our steaks you’ll flip for our burgers” and the first location (although several more are planned, along with franchises) is in the Florida Keys, at the Postcard Inn at Holidays Isle. They have billboards with big, juicy burgers tempting all driving by.

We stopped in for lunch recently. As the name implies, this is not the place to take your vegan friends. However, they do have a veggie burger, ahi tuna sandwich and a few salads on the menu for the less carnivorous. But since it is a burger joint, I will focus  the review on said burgers. And chips. We ordered the blue cheese chips, which promise to be potato chips smothered in blue cheese. In reality, they were covered in ranch dressing and some actual blue cheese. Nonetheless, they were good, and not a single chip crumb was left, but there could have definitely been more blue cheese, and it could have been melted.

The burgers come in ten varieties, plus an option to make your own. At $6.99 to $8.99 they seem like a pretty good deal, too. That is, until you factor in that all sides are extra. Fries, onion rings and more can all be had for an extra charge. The burgers come in many varieties like the “wine country” with roasted peppers, roasted tomatoes and goat cheese topped with greens or the “southwest” with black bean and corn salsa, pepper jack cheese, roasted tomatoes and chipotle sauce.

All of the burgers are juicy, nicely cooked and come on a brioche style bun (yummy!) with the Shula logo branded on top.

The restaurant interior is typically sports-bar-like with a large bar and fairly generic feel. The outside decks at the front and side of the restaurant, however, are really lovely, particularly on a picture perfect sunny day.

Shula Burger is located at Mile Marker 84.5 and allows dogs outside. Have you been? What did you think?
