Making Mozzarella

Recently, some friends asked us to come over for a mozzarella making party. I was intrigued. Of course, he said ” come over and we’ll be making mozzarella,” but I heard “bring Babka over and stuff your face with cheese.” Either way it sounded like a pretty good idea to me.

Our friend had taking a mozzarella making class recently and was looking forward to doing it at home, so he ordered five pounds of cheese curds. (My last experience with cheese curds, in Wisconsin, was not so pleasant…)  There were eight of us, lots of food, and good times. I posted an update and photo on Facebook, but one of my friends insisted on video. Here it is:

I will say that the whole heating, stretching and making perfect, glossy balls of cheese is a bit harder than it looks. It really took some elbow grease. In the end, it was worth all of the effort, mostly on the part of our friend, although I helped for a few moments. Would I do it again? Sure. Not only is it fun, but it is engaging and you get to surround yourself with things like bruschetta and pesto, so a big win.
