Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar, Key West

Yes, there are tiny mermaids in my cocktail.

Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar is new on the Key West dining and bar scene, and it seems like it is here to stay. Housed in the former Finnegan’s Wake space, it was something else in between. (I can’t even recall the name of that short-lived place.) Fortunately, it seems like Lucy’s has their act together.

They opened with a huge block party a couple of weeks ago, featuring live music, and what seemed like the whole town in attendance. FKGuy and I headed over to check it out for lunch recently.

Mmm... cheese.
Mmm… cheese.

The surf theme is ever-present, and the interior has a stage for live music, a huge bar and a bunch of televisions. A casual, beachy vibe makes this laid-back joint a nice choice for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Saturday and Sunday mornings feature a brunch menu with egg dishes and a scaled back version of the regular menu.

After perusing the endless drink list, we settled on a couple of margaritas (on the rocks, with salt – is there any other way?) Our server was friendly, and though our appetizer came out at the same time as the rest of our food, service was otherwise very good.

Scrambled, not fried, huevos.

We ordered the queso dip, a spicy, cheesy concoction topped with scallions, tomatoes, and feta served with tortilla chips. As our came out with the meal, I proceeded to dunk my sweet potato fries in the dip. FKGuy poured some over his potatoes. All in all, it was a big win for us, and the queso dip. We’ll be eating that again soon, I hope.  He ordered the huevos rancheros, billed as “two fried eggs with…” which came served like tacos with scrambled eggs. I was more bothered by the misinformation than he was, and the dish was delicious. (We were hungry.)

I ordered the Juicy Lucy burger, and I will tell you: it gives Blackfin (my long-standing highest rated burger on the island) a run for its money. Plus, it is about 30% less expensive. Win. As a bonus, you can choose fries, sweet potato fries, or a salad on the side.

The Juicy Lucy.
The Juicy Lucy.

My overall impression is that the food and service are both very good. I am looking forward to a return visit during the week with their full menu of sandwiches, salads and more. I’d also like to sit outside on their covered deck once the weather cools off a bit.

Visit Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar at 320 Grinnell Street, Key West. They’re open every day for lunch and dinner, as well as brunch on the weekends.
