The Seat is Up

For the past twenty years, FKGuy and I have compromised on all sorts of things. One of the things we “compromised” on was that the toilet seat and cover should always be down unless you are actually using the toilet. This took a bit of convincing at first, but it has become habit and I can’t remember the last time a toilet seat was left up in our house.

This may not seem like a big issue – and in reality, it is not (you know, unless the seat suddenly gets left up), and it is now just the way it is. It has been going on for so long it is hard to remember a time when we even needed to talk about it.

Recently, we were at our friends’ house meeting their new dog. It had been a rough day for our friends and there was a lot of wine involved. At some point, mid-Thai-takeout meal, FKGuy got up to use the bathroom. Upon his return, he announced that he loved our friends house and he loved that there were two gay men that live there. The three of us left at the table looked at him kind of funny.

We have lots of friends – some gay, straight, different religions, races and backgrounds. So, the sudden need to announce his adoration for our gay friends was a bit odd. Until he followed up with this: “I got to the bathroom and the seat was already up!”  Now it all made sense.

Of course, this brings up a couple of thoughts…

1. It just looks better when the lid and seat are down

2. There is a far greater chance of dropping an eye liner, toothbrush, cell phone, or your last roll of toilet paper in the toilet if the seat is left up.

3. Don’t the dogs try to either jump in, fall in or drink from the toilet? Or cats? Perhaps your pet bird with his clipped wings would fly around and hover over the open toilet only to realize he can’t fly and subsequently drown?

What are your thoughts? Have you ever lost an item to an open toilet lid? Do you prefer a house with only men where the seat is in a constant state of being left up? Do you get annoyed when men leave the seat up? I know you have something to get off your chest here, so feel free to leave it in the comments below.
