Our March 2026 Wine Cruise on AmaWaterways in France on the Rhone River was such a smashing success that we are doing it again in July 2028. This time on the Rhine River.
As it has been a few months since the cruise and with the release of our wi nemaker Sally Johnson Blum’s Stereograph label, we thought it an ideal time to provide a recap for those who were unable to join us, and to remind those that did of the great times that we all had. What an incredible journey we had through southern France! From the vibrant coastal energy of Marseille to the sun-soaked vineyards along the Rhône, our time together was filled with rich history, world-class wines, and unforgettable culinary moments. While the wine, food and scenery were difficult to beat, the friendships, camaraderie and wonderful spirit of our group and the crew are what most stand out when I think back on the cruise.
Some of the attendees met in Barcelona for a few day pre-cruise tour. Others met in Marseille for a few days of fun, food, wine and touring before the cruise departed from Arles. For the Marseille crew, one day, we toured Marseilles, winding through the historic Le Panier district, sampling traditional anise-flavored pastis, olive oil, chocolates, and local navette biscuits and of course, wine, before taking in sweeping harbor views from the Palais du Pharo. The next day we toured Aix en Provence and Cassis – of course with another wine tasting. We also had the most incredible fondue and cheese lunch at a wine and cheese shop recommended by our guide.
Finally, after almost 2 years of planning, the entire group of 80 boarded the AmaKristina in Arles and met Sally Johnson Blum and Ed Kurtzman – our 2 amazing winemakers on the cruise. Upon boarding, it was amazing to me to see and recognize and be seen and recognized by a number of the crew members from when we sailed on this ship two and a half years earlier, in December 2023.
Among the highlights of the cruise were the wine tastings hosted by Sally and Ed featuring a wide assortment of their wines, and the wine dinners in the Chef’s Table with the same wines poured in the dining room for our group were superb!
We also included a custom private excursion in Chateauneuf du Pape for the entire group of 80 which was a massive hit. By the end of the cruise, everyone was well acquainted regardless of who already knew who before the cruise started.
In Arles, we traced ancient history through the city’s famed Roman Amphitheater and explored the vibrant landscapes that inspired Vincent van Gogh. A true highlight was venturing up to the hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence, where some stepped inside the Carrières de Lumières—a breathtaking light and music show projected onto the walls of a massive limestone quarry—before visiting a local olive farm to taste authentic Provençal oils.
Cruising into Avignon, the “City of Popes,” we explored the magnificent 14th-century Palais des Popes and sampled local delicacies like macarons, tapenades, and regional cheeses.
As we sailed into quaint Viviers, we ventured into the countryside to the village of Grignan for a unique treat: hunting for prized “Black Diamond” truffles alongside a local farmer and his working dog.
Our stop in Tournon brought a blend of scenery and indulgence. Our favorite was climbing Hermitage vineyard where some of the best wine in the world comes from. Some rode a historic steam train through the dramatic Gorge du Doux, while others enjoyed a decadent red wine and chocolate pairing at Le Château de Tournon and of course, many visited Valrhona chocolate.
In Sainte-Colombe and Vienne, we stepped back in time with a tour of preserved Roman temples, ancient abbeys, and Gothic cathedrals, while the more adventurous among us took on a scenic hike up to the Mount Pipet viewpoint.
We concluded the wine cruise in Lyon, France’s undisputed gastronomic capital. We explored the secret covered passageways (traboules) of Old Lyon, browsed the famous Les Halles de Lyon – Paul Bocuse food market, and ventured out into the nearby hills for a classic Beaujolais winery tour and tasting
Following the cruise, some went to Paris, Switzerland, stayed in France and others went home. We went to Lausanne, but more on that later.
