This past weekend we had guests that were first time visitors to Key West. In an effort to show them the best time possible, we hit some of the highlights (more on that in Wednesday’s post.) We did send them on a Conch Train tour, as it is an effective way to see a lot of Key West and get some of the history in a short amount of time. Plus, you get to sit, which in this heat is a good thing.
They were on the tour for a few minutes when there was a medical emergency. Apparently, one of the passengers had heat stroke. (I have said it before, I will say it again: hydrate, people… that means water, not beer or a piña colada.) The next Conch Train arrived to take the passengers before the ambulance came. The gentleman with the the heat issue was taken to the hospital and our friends, and the other passengers, resumed the tour.
Later that evening, we boarded the Danger Charters boat Sarah for a sunset sail. As we were cruising around, I was chatting with passengers and crew alike. I may have mentioned the Conch Train/heat stroke incident, when the nice guy pouring me wine says “Oh, I treated that guy when he came into the hospital.” He is an ER nurse and mocked mercilessly by his co-workers who call him Focker. (Never seen Meet the Parents? That is a whole different post.)
Just as I am amazed, once again, by what a small town Key West really is, he says to me “Oh, and my girlfriend is the paramedic that picked him up.”
Indeed Key West is a small town, and as it is an expensive one, many people have more than one job. It is easy to run into people in their various work situations. I hope that if I ever have to see Focker in a working capacity at the hospital, that he will pour me a glass of wine. Heat stroke guy? I hear that he is fine, other than possibly a bruised ego.
