Every holiday has its fair share of leftovers, but if my mother is cooking, you can bet there are enough leftovers to feed everyone a second, third and possibly fourth time. After a few days, however, I just can’t eat the same foods again. (Plus, these were not my leftovers.) Which led me to trying out the new grill.
I grilled some chicken and rib eye steaks, and we had a good time. But alas, there were leftovers. Now, I had leftover chicken, steak and about seventeen containers of food that my mother brought over. What to do with all of this? Well, we ate a bunch of the chicken, leftover brisket and gefilte fish, and nearly all of the macaroons that were within eyesight. I made sure there was no macaroon cake leftover, however.
Still there was a bunch left over. What to do with it all? Well, there are two furry four-legged animals that live in my house that had ideas of their own. This week, my dogs, in addition to their normal kibble, dined on rib eye steaks and grilled chicken. All week.
I know, I know, there are those that say not to give dogs people food. All of the treats that Babka and Latke were eating this week were rinsed free of any seasoning, and had nothing harmful in them. Of course this is a good time to point out that there are a number of foods your dog should never consume, and while this is not a comprehensive list, and you should certainly check with your vet if you have questions, here are foods you may find in leftovers that your dog should always avoid:
- Chocolate
- Macadamia Nuts
- Onions
- Garlic
- Grapes, raisins, and anything in the currant family
- Avocados
- Seeds of fruit. My girls love apples, but they only get slices, and no core or seeds.
Next week I’ll be back with all new tales from Key West. But first, I’ll have tog et some raw marrow bones for the dogs… Have a great weekend!
