Meringue or whipped cream? I always choose whipped cream, clearly because it is the superior topping to a Key Lime Pie. My friend Marcie would disagree.
There are those that think Blond Giraffe makes the best pie. Sadly, they too, are wrong. I have a problem with the Blond Giraffe. For one thing, they are everywhere, kind of like Starbucks. It has become ubiquitous, and I don’t dig it. Secondly, their crust is soggy. The filling is creamy and tart, everything you’d want inside a pie. Then you get to the outside and the whole thing falls apart. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself. There are 5 locations in Old Town Key West, and another one in Marathon.
If, however, you actually do want the best Key Lime Pie, you will have to go to Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe, on the corner of Greene and Elizabeth Streets. You may be wondering what makes it so great. It is not that Kermit often runs around the shop in his chef’s hat, although he does. Or that they were featured on the Today show, although they were. It is that the filling is creamy, tart and utterly key lime flavored, and the crust remains crisp even a couple of days later. Try it. You’ll like it.
Where is your favorite?

Kermits KW key lime shoppe is the best
Agreed. As a bonus, they always have some goodies open to sample.
Kermit’s without question!! We heard so much about the Blonde Giraffe we tried it -went right back to Kermit’s! We went to Kermit’s every day we were in Key West. Haven’t tasted anything key lime as sublime since!
They also, ship, you know… of course that increases the price dramatically. Might as well just visit again!
Not a big pie eater, but love, love the key lime shooters at Hogs Breath! They are the best!
Way to keep an open mind! I will have to try those next time I am there (which, undoubtedly will be soon). Perhaps you’ve stumbles upon something here… a boozy key lime pie. It’s a thought, anyway.
