I have been avoiding Blue Heaven for quite a while now, simply because there is a perpetual one-to-two hour long wait. However, after winning a $25 gift certificate at the Hog’s Breath Hog Trot 5K last week, I was inspired to go. After playing tennis – 2 sets for me, 6 for FKGuy, we had a snack, thus setting ourselves up for success in the whole wait-forever-to-be-seated scenario, and headed out to Blue Heaven. As expected the wait was about an hour, so we perched ourselves at the bar with overly vodka heavy Bloody Marys and settled in with someone else’s leftover newspaper. It was a postcard-perfect 70 degree day with bright blue skies and no clouds, so sitting at the outdoor bar for a while was no big deal. Plus, we had the beverages. The thing about Blue Heaven is this: it is one of those places that actually have good food and generally good service, so the wait, while annoying, can sometimes be worth it. That being said, I probably won’t go back until the summer on a day when there are no ships in port.
Sunday is a breakfast only day – no lunch options. But the choices are extensive: homemade granola, omelets, eggs Benedict, fluffy pancakes and more. We opted for a Benedict (which you can get with ham, shrimp or lobster, beef tenderloin or none), the omelet of the day, filled with avocado, white cheddar cheese, spicy black beans and salsa, and a side of potatoes. The omelet comes with a choice of breads, and our choice of the homemade banana bread was the way to go.
The service was very friendly and attentive. There are those that say the chickens roaming the yard are the stars of the show, but they clearly had too many Bloody Marys before the meal. Though the chickens are, ahem, charming, the food is the real deal here. Consistent and well prepared, the poached eggs were perfectly runny inside and the omelet was fluffy with the filling evenly distributed.
The food at Blue Heaven is very good, as is the atmosphere, but don’t go too hungry, as you will be waiting a long time for that meal. If you have the patience to wait, it is always good. Clearly, I should have befriended the owner who was sitting in front of me at jury duty a few weeks ago.
