My sister-in-law is coming to visit this weekend and it will be her first trip to Key West. Naturally, I’ve been trying to plan some fun activities for the weekend. She is coming with my mother-in-law, who has been here before, so I am coming up with things we can do that both will enjoy.
First on the list: Food. OK, this is more my love than theirs, but everyone likes a good meal. So, we are planning to take them to some fun and fabulous local restaurants. There are so many good ones to choose from, and a limited amount of time. Sadly, we will not be able to hit them all.
Next up: Tourist activities. A sunset sail, perhaps? There are many companies that offer them, but Danger Charters does a wine tasting sunset sail and actually has decent wine. That could be the deciding factor. Fort Zachary Taylor beach? Maybe. A walking tour of the island? Undoubtedly. Mallory Square Sunset Celebration? Definitely yes. It is a circus, and not one that I enjoy very much, but everyone should see it once.
What are your favorite activities when you are here on vacation or have company in town? I’d love to hear them. We have company in town almost constantly in the winter, so I’m always looking for suggestions. Let’s hear ’em.
I’d also love to hear your favorite “first time in Key West” story. (Who knows? It may even appear here on the blog!)

I am a sucker for a view. My top 3 on the island are #1 Louie’s Backyard…sitting on the deck listening to the waves come in…reminds me of a Corona commercial! lol #2 The roof top of LaConcha…especially at sunset. #3 Tower Bar at Turtle Kralles…great happy hour specials, too (try the bucket of bones).
Among the best “touristy” things to do for me would be taking one of the Trolly Tours or Butterfly Museum.
And although it’s not for the faint of heart (prob not your MIL’s style) but there is always Drag Queen Bingo at Bourbon St Pub…hey, it’s for charity;-)
Oh how I miss KW…planning our next trip now!
Thanks for the comments… I love the Afterdeck at Louie’s. It is the best view!
I try to take all my “first time to Florida” friends down to Key West – it never fails to please. I’m looking forward to taking my kids for their first visit. The sooner the better (I need a vacation)!
