A Dog’s Day

Only in Key West… We are fortunate to have some very good friends all over the world. Many of them lead a very lovely 2.5-kids-and-a-white-picket-fence kind of life. In Key West, however, we have an inordinate number of friends who either have grown children, or have opted out of the kid thing entirely (much like we have).  They do, however, still have white picket fences.

So it was not the least bit surprising to me when we were invited to a doggie birthday party this past weekend. Max turned two, and is as adorable as ever. To celebrate, his humans threw him a party, complete with cake (made of liverwurst and sour cream, apparently). There were hats, balloons, and of course, dogs, hanging at a local bar.

Unfortunately, Babka was a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of dogs and activity going on and insisted on leaving early. While she did not manage to sample the cake, she did get in a nice birthday kiss for Max.

Here is my question: Are dog birthday parties the new norm? I have to say, I am all for it. There is adult food, can involve drinking, and the cuteness factor is off the charts. The downside? The subjects don’t like to stay still for photos. Sorry for the lack of cute dogs in birthday hats.
